QUOTE (Galcobar @ Oct 15, 2008 - 2:44 AM)You want power but have no money. That's a problem.Cheap. Reliable. Fast. Pick two.
Whatever the FT-86 will come to market as, it will be a cool little sports car, whether it wears the Celica badge or not.

Mike W1996 Toyota Celica ST205 GT-FOURGT2860RS turbine, TiAL mvr44, JE 86.5φ piston, Clutchmasters FX400, APEX P-FC269awhp / 273ft-lbs
Rant on appearance: I didn't really read the whole topic, but I feel like I may be one of the few who thinks this car is just... ugly. Anyone? Like a pretty girl who's eyes are just a bit too far apart. And squinting into a bright light. That shows wrinkles. And she has a really small butt... Yuck. Ugh... I don't like it is my point. I never liked the 7g Celica either. I'm down with RWD 4 bangers and all, but when it looks that close to something thats been done by them already... Not making me want it. I also hate Lancers for the same reason. And all Subarus, on the realz.

Everything else: Again, I'm not hating on the drivetrain necessarily just the concept... I think Toyota needs to focus more on something new. Instead of basing a brand new car on the 80's AE86, which my family had and I loved personally, move up to RWD V6... turbo? They could get crazy. I'm actually liking Hyundai's in general better than Toyota, and I was raised on Toyota. Not like Nissan though cause I really think they go overboard on sports cars not even for normal people hardly. Not to mention I got to drive a 350z once and hated every second of it compared to how fun a 300 and a 240 are. Completely redesign the body style. Or bring the new 2011 AWD Supercharged Sienna Mach 5 megasport (rolls of the tongue) to the table. It could be a huge success.

INNOVATION is what I'm seeking. I'm not sayin I expect them to bring back the Supra but it's almost 2011. I thought we were supposed to be flying in like... 4 years. Or maybe I just let Michael J. Fox mislead me in my youthful ignorance.

As a relatively inexpensive sport coupe this is pretty much what I expect from Toyota, true to their caliber. I would love to see Toyota move back up a step and set a LEGIT precedent for reasonable modern sports coupes instead of doing mild tweaks on ones that exist or continuing to use Scion (TC is the worst car since Fierro) as a base. But maybe I'm just a pushy proggressionist.

Unless any of that's a supposed option, idk. I tried to research this but didn't get very far so I'm kinda talkin out of my ass. I'm stressin on Christmas. But anyways...

somehow the design has bored me also, especially the rear end. i love this photoshop though:

I sure hope im not the only one that thinks how incredibly tragic it is that toyota is going with a subaru engine (I didnt read through every page of this thread), is toyota no longer capable or is there some specific reasoning behind this?
well its just a matter of time for sports cars to switch to boxer engines. the lower center of gravity pays its dividends! And as far as the rumors go the boxer engine could be quite modified by Toyota, maybe even Yamaha kindasad.gif

from what i understand alot of toyota motors are tuned by yamaha?
Not just tuned by Yamaha, but built by Yamaha.

I dunno about the rest of the motor, but I know a lot of the heads are built by Yamaha. 2JZ, 3S, 1LR (LF-A), all built by Yamaha. That's why they sound like a symphony biggrin.gif

Don't forget all of the S block engines, 1ZZ and 2ZZ, and I'm fairly confident that all of the A series engines were manufactured by Yamaha as well. I'm just too lazy to go check right now.

ive lost all hope now...

Toyota is not interested in sports cars. Period.

The boxer engine is great and all but I just prefer everything Toyota.
Problem: Toyota wants to build a RWD, lightweight, affordable. sports car, then water it down so that it gets good gas mileage and is cheap to sell.

Issue: We want a RWD, lightweight, affordable sports car that doesn't get good gas mileage but blows everything else off the road.

Solution: We let Toyota water it down, put the crappiest engine they have in it, then we all buy it dirt cheap and swap 2JZ's in it.

Me too. I don't care how advanced the VVT-i gets and hybrid technologies that Toyota comes out with, a nice 2JZ solves everything.

I'm only half kidding. I really do want to see a 2JZ in one of these.

Toyota FT86 concept in Gran Turismo 5

that looks hot man. the turbo g-series has like 221hp. crossing fingers for a turbo version wink.gif
weird, i have to check my self but seems the gran turismo 5 FT86 specs state that NA is 221hp and the turbo model has 290hp. it makes more sense for a 2 liter boxer monster.

frown.gif Why would you buy an evo? what would you do with the other 3 seats and whole extra doors.

What I think when you think I care
why such a comment? 4 doors is awesome, awd is cool, turbo is cool, big power is even cooler. evo overall is the best awd around. it could be a st185/205 but the stock power levels on celica are just poor.
back on topic, Subaru will present "rear wheel drive sports car concept" at Geneva Motor Show this march, it could be the "other face" of ft86

It WILL be RWD. It has already been confirmed.

>Subaru’s new Coupe is go! The Japanese firm has confirmed that a concept version of its long-awaited Coupe, jointly developed with Toyota, will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. No pictures have yet been released, but our exclusive renderings give you an idea of how the newcomer will look.

What’s more, the firm has confirmed that the car will be built on an all-new platform, and while the Coupe will feature Subaru’s trademark horizontally-opposed boxer engine, it won’t get the firm’s symmetrical all-wheel drive. Instead, like to Toyota model, it will be rear-drive, giving the firm a rival to Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe in the US market.

Subaru has also confirmed that it will show its new Impreza Concept, which was first seen at the LA Show last year, and the firm’s new Trezia model which is a B-segment MPV that’s essentially a rebadged version of Toyota’s forthcoming Verso-S.

The comments on the bottom of that page make me laugh. Guess they seem to forget the fact that toyota pioneered japan's way into the NOW WRC by dominating the latter half of class B rally, and the first few years of class A. They also pioneered many techologies that helped them get that distinction. And in the end, toyota ended with some of the most popular sports cars for the car enthusiast amongst us, and even "partnered" with subaru( if you want to count buying out more than half the companies stock as a partnership), for as i can see it to dominate three sides of the automotive market. Let subaru do good with their little rally machines...let lexus soar, and toyota just has to focus on the ****ty ECO vehichles they have been putting out thus far...****ty for toyota fans, cool for lexus and subauru owners because they still get what they want...

Still, i welcome our new RWD sports coupes....whenever i do make it back to america, i will be picking up the Subaru version..That thing is too sexy looking to pass up!!!

I dunno Coupe is a sports car 4 doors is a family car IMHO, 185 and 205 are rally cars, and kick ass ones at that.

The Gran Chaco Rally 2010 edition from paraguay, which is harsh desert racing, we got Evo 10's 9s 8's 7s Subaru imprezas the new ones the old ones...

This one took em all to school

What I think when you think I care
honestly there are to many subaru fan boys out there saying that toyota is making this car worse. I still couldn't pick any other two car companies that could go together so well as Toyota and subaru would

Wow that thing is sexy...i would pay money for one of those snorkel kits...thank you sir for the picture bowdown.gif

And i agree stambo. I have to say that subaru fanboys dont understand the fact that you have two companies who each have a long heritage in racing in general...well toyota does, but it seems only natural that btwn the two, something like this would eventually happen....back to the OP's point, if it even matters on this topic, it would be nice to see how this blending of ideas will turn out. Toyota has a name behind it and so does subaru. I dont think they wouldve cut corners in the design of these two vehichles even though they are both RWD instead of AWD. I mean, since the OP started this topic discussing the merits and downfalls of both drivetrain systems, this situation should prove to be a good comparison.

The odometer on my screen just passed 999999 KM while scrolling that picture lol...

Oh btw, That car in the pic is an original ST185 Carlos Sainz, Toyotoshi (local toyota dealer) had it parked for 10 years, I heard all they did was work on the suspension and engine was pretty much stock they might have tuned something.

On the topic note...I don't understand why they just dont take the family out of the Caldina gt four, take out the pair of doors slap on a limited edition garret turbo on it force yamaha to make a vvtl-i head and a 8500 rpm limit...aerodynamic the ***&!@$ out of it make a regular aspirated celica version and GO GO GO!
