checked that its not the problem...
a higher output alt won't blow anything, My guess is you accidentally blew a fuse or a fusible link maybe whilst changing things out...
dont take the dust shield off, it has a purpose.

Car should go into gear only when you depress the clutch while it is on/running. Sounds like your clutch is out. Hopes that helps....
