If you still have the instructions that came with the PS3, there are instructions in there how to do it (take that X360!). If not, do a google search. but it's super easy, plug in a USB hard drive of equal or greater capacity (not the new HD) to the PS3, go into the system settings, go to backup and backup your PS3 to the external HD. When this is done, power down and unplug the PS3, on the bottom you'll see a little cover with a screw, take that out, remove the cover, pull the HD out, take the mounting bracket off, put it on the new one, then slide it back in and put the cover back on, plug in and go. i think you have to initialize the hard drive when you first turn the system on, after that, plug back in the same external you used for backup, then go to system->restore, and restore from the USB hard drive, and you should be set.

i don't remember right off how to check and see how much you have left, it's in the system menu somewhere.
