Topic #86026 35 posts Started by gotian
I went out of town 150 miles away from home, I took the celica cause it was running fine and now it wont start. This no start thing is frustrating the hell out of me to no end. 94 gt manual transmission, has a new distributor, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, igniter, new walbro fuel pump, new fuel filter. I need help, I came down here for work and now now I cant go to work for my last day here and I cant get home either, please someone help me.

correction** it will fire up and die right away. and my idle air control valve is functioning properly

Can you feather the accelerator pedal to keep it running? Perhaps it has a vacuum leak or a faulty fuel pump. A bad coil or ignitor can sometimes cause the symptoms you are describing as well.

Check the vacuum hoses around the intake manifold if you havent already

if i press the gas pedal it dies even quicker
it seems like your not getting fuel if it's dying that quickly
i dont know why, i just checked the pressure and it has pressure coming from the pump. could the fuel pressure regulator be bad? i've never had one go bad on me before so I dont know if it would do that. im uploading a video on youtube right now

Signs of a Bad Fuel Pressure Regulator

The vehicle engine runs rough and often stumbles and sputters.
The engine will not start after ignition. Usually, this problem is encountered in the morning when you start your vehicle. Many times, the engine starts, but stalls shortly after starting.
The fuel pump in the vehicle becomes noisy at times.
A bad fuel pressure regulator can also result in fouled spark plugs.
Last but not the least, the fuel mileage of the engine decreases noticeably.

Lately while i've been down here I have had all these signs except i havent checked the plugs.
Last night the car was running a little rough under acceleration. Obviously im having the second symptom right now. My gas mileage was crappy coming down here where I used half a tank driving 150 miles where before I would only use 1/4 of my tank. the pump is noisy but thats cause its a walbro.
so can anyone confirm the fpr before I spend 80 bucks on a new one? seeing as how that is the only part of the fuel system besides the injectors that I have not changed I don't know what else it could be
Could be a leaking vac hose going to the FPR.

so i got the sucker out and there is fuel in the rail but barely any fuel came out of the regulator or the return line.
Fill the tank up with fuel a bit more..The walbro could have its feeding tube up a bit to high, and even though it shows that you have gas on the gauge it may not be getting any... Also make sure the walbro is constantly on....wire it directly to 12 volts.

so i got a new fpr and im waiting for advance to send me another one because the oring on the regulator is too big and it pinches when you try to install it...bah
installed the new fpr car fired up and died again.

anyone wanna help me dump the car into a canal? I'm kinda fed up here
i had a very similar situation in my supra. it was the short hose that comes off the pump to the feed line. it had actually split so fuel was getting to the injectors but once i pressed the gas it died. check that

Do what I said....Fill the car up with gas...if that doesn't fix it then wire the walbro to constant 12v, if that doesn't fix it do what Smaay said.
The pump is submersed in fuel so yes the pump is sucking on gas also the pump kicks on no problem. We've now narrowed it down to the injectors not spraying so tomorrow I will check that short house in the feed line and then if that checks out I will be looking at the grounds from the ecu and on.

If anyone wants to help me could you tell me where the right grounds to check are? I'm going to take a break from all this since I've been at it since 10 this morning
The pump is on when you are cranking that doesn't mean it stays on when you let off the key, its a separate system.. And with an 1/8th of a tank the pump is not "submerged in fuel".

Remove the air intake hose from the throttlebody. Have a friend start the car while you simultaneously spray starter fluid into the intake. This is the only way to verify you have a fuel problem unless you have a fuel pressure tester and noid light set available.

The ECU takes over the ignition system from the ignitor above 400rpm, just a thought.
A bad coil or bad ignitor will function correctly until they heat up, which is usually a matter of seconds after the car is started, just a thought.

Never ever buy a replacement part unless you can test and verify the part is faulty. If you can get the gas smell off of the FPR you could probably return it citing the fact that "it doesnt fit"
The car will run with starting fluid. And I can return the part that's not am issue for me.
okay so i put 5 gallons into the gas tank, primed the pump and started it, nothing its still doing the same issue. i have half a tank now. it will run with starter fluid as i said before. so how do i wire the walbro to a constant 12v in the celica i've never had to do that before except in my rx7.

The local autoparts store should have a fuel pressure tester for rental. I usually go to autozone, its something like a $200 deposit, which of course you get a 100% refund when you bring it back. They also have a Noid set for $20 or $50 I cant remember, which you plug into the injector wire to see if they are firing.

Two very good tests although we can be 90% sure its the fuel pump.
i used to work at autozone and yeah they have one but i have someone coming with a tester so we will see, if its the pump then i will have to get another one to replace this one. but why would the pump go out so quick? its only a week old and walbro pumps come highly recommended from everyone on the forum
Manufacturing defect, thats why most decent parts come with a warranty, just in case. If its a week old then it sounds very likely that its the fault.
yeah, i can replace it with another one. but the place i bought it from is closed until monday.
Well you can take power off of the antenna, or the cig ligher...or just get a really long piece of wire and go from the the battery to the pump, may be ghetto but all your doing is testing.
continuously searching the forums I find a ton of people who have had the same problems as me almost to the T and no one has ever posted if they have resolved it or not. And the weirdest thing is these people are almost always from florida
oh also since its a 94 can i jumper the fp from the diagnostics box to keep it on?

NM I found it B+ and FP. When I jump it the pump constantly stays on. so what does that mean?

Try to start the car with it on.
i did, nothing happened, same problem

the guy came over and had looked at the car, he said its an electrical issue that is not allowing the injector pulse. he said he will have it fixed tomorrow i have to get it towed to his shop

Thats what a Noid Light set would tell you. The injectors are controlled by the ECU and I believe the NE+ signal from the Distributor
he said the signal from the distributor for the injectors was not reaching the injectors
