Plasti Dip - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #81337 36 posts Started by BonzaiCelica
Today a friend of mine told me about a product called Plasti Dip spray paint. He said it acts like a rubber coating over your existing paint and doesn't do any damage biggrin.gif Been looking at quite a few videos on youtube and I've seen people spray their whole front hoods and then peel off the rubber paint right after without any damage to the paint. Its about $8 a can from what I've heard and you can get it at lowes and home depot.

I think this is a great idea for those guys in the photoshop request thread who are always asking members to edit their rims paint so they can see which color looks best. Just youtube search plasti dip rims and you'll understand what I'm talking about. They say about one can per rim. Applying about 4-5 coats per rim.

Question is, how does this hold up to washing your car? I don't plan on doing my whole car only my red hatchback trunk smile.gif how long does it last??? I also just read that it best if you use a ultimate rubbing compound (so that the surface your applying the paint too) before applying the plasti dip so that it will adhere to the paint that much better and taking it off will be much simpler.

I used this to paint the kamel lower grill on my Audi..

2006 BMW 330i - 6 Speed - Dinan Stage 12014 Toyota Rav4 XLE
great stuff friend of mine used it on his evo11 wheels.. It comes right off.. and lots of colors to choose from
In another forum, a few have done it their wheels with satisfactory results.
1 guy did it to his off-road Jeep & says he's had no issues.

Best thing about it IMO, if you don't like it, peel it off!
also seems good if you have all season tires and don't want to switch rims summer/winter this should act as a protective coating for the harshness of winter very nice.

BMW guys love the stuff. I plan to try it on a set of wheels. Works so great someone did their entire car.

Edit: it's the pressure washer that did most the damage. As long as you spray it thick, should peel off no problem.

not enough lighting in the video but I get the point...

I'm a testimony to plasti dip. I just now took off the black plasti dip that was on my spoiler and it came off very nicely without leaving any stains to the paint!!! biggrin.gif The better the prep/cleaner/smoother surface and more layers you apply the easier it is to take off. I've read you can use 1 can for two wheels....

This stuff is like venom from spider man hehe

I'm just in the process of painting my winter rims with plasti-dip. All but one is left. Stuff seems really thick and nice.
Will update when its done and on the car.
now i'm interested in doing my car with that..been looking for a cheap way to get away from the green
ok so they have this make your own color kit Plasti-dip 12209. It costs about $23. Then how would I go about getting it in the aresol form. I'd have to buy a thinner right, and then get a spray gun??? How much would that cost me.

For all you pro's out their that paint your own celica's. I was thinking of just buying a can of white and clear color and mixing the two to get a silver-ish color? I need some incite please

you wont be able to mix a silver color using their kit, and white and clear will just give you white and a semi translucent white at best.

the closest you can get to silver, will be grey, ( black and white ) start with white and add very small increments of black until the shade is close to your silver, it will lack that metallic reflectiveness of silver, but the actual shade can be very close if done properly.

I plan on painting this section with the plasti dip! the kit it self costs $25 as mentioned before. Now how do I go about making the plasti dip solution thinner with paint thinner so that I can paint my trunk on my hatchback?? How much paint thinner do I add to my custom grey plasti dip color.

thanks in advance...

For those of you that have used it, does it dry smooth or does it have a texture to it?

Thats what SHE said.

Where did you find this stuff here in town? I work by Industrial Paints & Plastics and apparently they sell it over there. I might walk over at some point today to see what they want for it...

They're pricey there; I went there at one point to source some Carbon Fiber Twill and all the curing resin I needed and their final cost just for the supplies needed was more than a new CF hood from Seibon.

Depends, its just like regular rattle can spray, and you must expect some orange peel.

If its cold out, try to warm up the surface you are spraying, as well the contents of the can. It goes on pretty thin, but doesn't run easy when applied heavy.

Just have to watch out for the cold. I have it on my rims now, and 1 week later its looking good and solid.
I picked up 4 cans of black for $8 a piece at home depot
I have used it before and luv it. I did the grill on my g35 and it came out great! I must say it sprays on kinds scary looks like lots of orange peel. But the stuff smooths out within 5 minutes and dries in 15. I guess the real test will be trying to peel it off which i havent tried.

Similarily with the Thermwell FrostKing Duct insulation that everyone's using to sound proof their car.
We don't get these in Canada.

....all we got are GT-fours biggrin.gif
^ America can keep its stupid Plasti-Dip and everything else, I'll take me a GT-4.

Having said that, I'll be doing me emblems soon.

Thinking about doing the whole top of the cellie with plastidip...I have 2 1/2 cans left...need to find some use for it.

That'll make the car match the riser blocks, and I can spray the skirts to with it...might pose interesting.

Since I don't feel like turning a wrench this weekend, I believe my finger can do the workout.

I'm curious, can you get it in the color you want? Like make it the same color as you car with the color code?
Yes I'll be doing my rims sometime as well with this stuff. I did the window trim on the MK3 with it and it worked very well.

I wouldn't say you could color match identically, but they do have a "create your own color" kit. I bet you could get pretty close.
