Jims '93 Alltrac Build Thread - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #76683 221 posts Started by presure2
LMAO!!
i dont think so, guys.
unfortunately, jim hasnt had a chance to get plates up to me for the car, and is planning to come up to pick it up this weekend.
tweak did his version of a code 54 fix, which did not work, and since the original wiring for the IC pump isnt there (he did his thing in by the ECU), im having a hard time getting my fix to work. he also failed to mention that since the 3rd ecu plug is part of the body harness, i had to add a wire to it for the level sensor for the IC system, and ground that as well.
just a little snag, that im sure we will overcome, but just one of those things i wish i had been told about, so i wouldnt have to spend time screwing with it, figuring it out for myself, when jim paid to have it all done before i ever got the car.
assuming the weather holds out long enough for him to come up, he's gonna pick up the alltrac, and drop off his 6th gen, along with 3 motors.
one 3rd gen 3s to go into the 6th gen for them to use as a DD when the alltrac comes back up for the next motor, and a 2nd gen 3s built bottom end, and a 3rd gen for me to use as a parts motor to complete it.
i am going to use the 2nd gen built bottom end, 3rd gen oiling system, and head to build the base of what will be the monster that goes into the alltrac down the road a bit.
now THAT is gonna be a hell of a project, i plan on pulling out all the stops on that one. hehe

WOW! Jim was telling me a bit about building a forged bottom end, what kind of power numbers are you guys thinking? What turbo setup? This is all awesome!! So many 3S's!!

you know me, i detail pretty much everything i do.

the quick run down is that you need to drill a tap some holes in the bottom of the block for the 3rd gen windage tray and baffle, and weld a fitting onto the 3rd gen oil cooler to return coolant to the back of the 2nd gen block.
im sure there are a few more minor details, but thats the 2 major things.
is supossed to snow here on the EC tonight/tommorow, so i am not sure if jim is gonna come get the car this week.
on the good side, we've been getting regular updates from jeff @ racerx fab. on the exhaust manifold he is building for jim, and man...this thing is lookin SEXY.

you can say that again man! i cant wait to see this thing all done.
crazy part is this is a "cheap" manifold by his (jeff @ racerx) standards.
his high end manifolds use all 321 stainless (this one is 304 sch.10 pipe)
burns stainless double slip collectors (~500$, JUST for the collector)
and allll v-bands.
they run 1500-1900, depending on application.
this one will be under 1k.

I will be going with a Precision 5857 for turbo choice. I plan on making 500AWHP at around 20-22psi on pump gas...and 600+AWHP on race gas. It will be a long time before I am comfortable enough with the 500AWHP tune at the track I am sure, to feel safe taking a pass at the 600+awhp tune. For now, the race gas tune will be for $hits and giggles, just to see what it will make at 30+psi. It will also be a good bit of information to see how well my setup is flowing, and where/when/what my next restriction in the build will/may be.

Nice! Planning on any head work?

2006 BMW 330i - 6 Speed - Dinan Stage 12014 Toyota Rav4 XLE
we're just planning on having the head refreshed for him while its all apart, and throwing in some (IIRC) kelford or whatever 268 cams.
he's coming up today to pick it up, since the 6th gen is still burried under snow, he isnt bringing that now, just the 2 motors for me to work on.
so, once they get here, this will turn into the motor build thread.
a teaser of whats to come.

well, jim and joe just left with the alltrac, driving it home, mr2 ecu works like a champ.
got the 2 motors here, sometime this coming week i'll get them both up on stands and start tearing them down.
as usual, many pics to come!

dude.. i dont even kno what to say to this picture.. bowdown.gif

So I finally had some time to go out to the garage, and work with jims motors a little.
I got the built 2nd gen block up on a stand, and immediately noticed a major problem.
the deck on the block is all pitted up and damaged, which i think would cause big leak problems down the road.
heres a couple pics of what im talking about.

the pic quality isnt the greatest, ( i took them with my ipod) but its pretty easy to see the damage.

So, I called Jim, and talked to him about the issue.
After he talked it over with his bro, he called me, and discussed the option of just ordering a new set of pistons and rings, and building a stroker, using shannons old 98 5s block, which I agreed was a great idea.
To save shipping time and cost, I told him i would just use jenns old 98 5s block, and he could just bring me shannons the next time he comes up.
So, thats what we're now going to do.
That said, the new build list looks somthing like this:
98 5s block
2nd gen 3s crank
arias rods
forged pistons (not sure on brand yet, prolly weisco's)
3rd gen head with supertech stock sized valves, prolly engle springs and 268* cams
3rd gen oil system
RacerX custom side feed intake manifold
RacerX custom top mount exhaust manifold
precison BB 5857
tial 38mm wastegate
3" turbo back exhaust
at least 800cc injectors
Power FC EMS
should be good for ~500AWHP @ ~20 or so psi.

should be a fun build!
now I need to do some research on the proper machine work, and what that will cost do have done locally.
pics as progress as made.

i dont think you are going to see 500AWHP in 20-22 psi with that turbo. its possible but i doubt it. also Im never using supertech valves ever again. twice now in 2ZZ applications the head of the valve broke off the stem and caused all sorts of bad stuff to happen. one was an engien I built and the other was an engine that a VERY reputable engine builder built. im going with Ferrea valves from now on!

Oh one more thing, you need a bigger wastegate than the 38MM. if you are gonna go big, you need a 44MM at a minimum. I dont care what anyone else says or what you might have heard. i have been doing this for a long time and you will see boost creep witha 38MM wastegate

the guy who is making the intake and ehxuast manifold for this project made 507whp @ 18psi, with just about the same setup only he's using HKS cams, and 1mm oversize valves, jims got 268 cams, and plans on running stock valves.
heres the build thread

ferrea's had an issue with the faces deforming over time in the 3s application not too long ago..im not picking the parts, anyway, im just putting it all together for them, and making suggestions along the way.

pretty much art!
jims great to work with. he comes to the table with plans and ideas, we refine them, and modify them along the way as needed with no issues.
he sends me up whatever money i need to gather parts, plus a little for labor (i always give him amazing labor prices, cause he's a good friend, and he's always helped me out when i needed it, and allowed me to learn ALOT working on his cars.)
its funny, i told jim a while ago:
"there are 2 kinds of people that dont work on theyre own cars. either you dont know enough about it to do it yourself, so you HAVE to pay for it, or you have more money than time, and its just less hassle to pay for it and get it done rather than trying to find the time/space/tools to do it all yourself."
Jim falls into the latter catagory, and for us, it works out perfectly.

so quite a few changes since my last post.
found some interesting things while taking apart itchys old built block.
first, it was supossed to be aria PISTONS, not rods as i put in my earlier post.
itchys for sale thread had that info in it, arias pistons, eagle rods.
opened it up, its the typical MCS build, with CP pistons, and eagle rods.
not a huge deal, since we cant use the pistons with the 5s block, but dissapointed to see they wernt what jim paid for.

so, talked things over with jimbo and joe, and then called ATS racing, and talked to arron about a few things.

that said, we're gonna go with a setup somthing like this (As usual totally subject to change..lol) :
98+ 5s block
custom stroker weisco 8.3:1 pistons
eagle rods
3s crank
acl race bearings
3rd gen oil system and pan
ATS 5sgte headgasket
3rd gen head
GSC 268* cams w adjustable gears
engle springs
custom intake and exhaust manifolds
precision 5857 turbo
tial gate
3" turbo back ehxuast
4" intake

i decided to start a thread in FI about the build of the motor, since that is good info to have in that forum, i will keep this thread more about the car itself with just minimal engine build pics from here on out.

What happened with this car? I was looking forward to some final numbers / vids or something...
My guess is that some time shortly after losing the privilege to rip 6gc.net members off, Jim lost the funding for the project. Who knows though? Feel like there would have been some sort of closure to this thread had it been completed..

2006 BMW 330i - 6 Speed - Dinan Stage 12014 Toyota Rav4 XLE
jim decided not to go ahead with the build, and the car and all the parts are for sale, last i heard.
who did he rip off?
he didnt "loose funding by ripping off people on 6gc", cause i already had/have all the parts for the build here in my garage.
he decided to go in another direction i guess. i dont know exactly, havnet talked to him in a while.

I did not recieve what was promised in my transaction with him, as well paying quite the hefty price for an engine set. 2.8k. Which was simply a purchase from another importer, sent directly to me. I could have done that myself for 1k less.

Being he allowed payments for the transaction I figured I could just chaulk it off as neutral transaction because I did actually recieve something for my money, whereas others were just getting nothing....just not all that was promised...which is documented.

Here is part of the promise in PM. Neither recieved.

"Price for a standard GEN3 with upgraded Heat exchanger and upgraded pump, and plug and play harness
2800 shipped to your door."

There was no upgraded heat exchanger, or pump. The harness is certainly not "plug and play" It wasn't touched. When I asked him about it, he said send it off to get Tweak to take care of it. Which implied I would be paying for it, as he made no mention of consuming the cost of such...which is why I was willing to pay a higher fee for the engine because these items were meant to be taken care of.

I also waited 4 months after final payment to recieve the engine due to "flooding" in the area according to claims. Whatever on that, but just another hit on the dial.

Also like to add, I don't even know if this engine set is in good working order. No idea on mileage or compression. It looks okay, and basically I'm moving forward on hopes and dreams. I trusted the word of the community as him as good seller, and hoping I don't get screwed completely after purchasing all the items to complete this swap.

I've just been moderately silent on the matter....

EDIT: Forgot to mention, what would make me happy about the transaction. Atleast 700 dollars sent back to my paypal.

This post has been edited by rave2n: Jul 2, 2012 - 12:03 PM
Yeah, I PM'd my personal story but it is very similar to the above, just more money was involved..

Then Jim COMPLETELY started ignoring EVERY attempt I made to contact him. Pretty bad business for someone you pay over $5000 to.. (which was a significant amount of money at the time considering I was 19.)

To this day I still don't have the parts he never sent me because I am too butthurt to go spend another $500-$1000 to get parts that I aleady paid for.. frown.gif

Edit: Holy crap, just read the above post again. So many similarities! I also got no compression test, zero paperwork whatsoever and he told me my motor was 19,000 miles but wouldn't show me the gauge cluster. Same thing with the harness. Same thing with the accumulated years of waiting, and same thing with the communitys word as to why I trusted him so much. $700 is about the amount that would make me happy as well. Obviously being the businessman Jim is, it is unfortunate to come to terms with the fact that that will more than likely never happen. Just like he will never send me my parts.. That sad realization is more or less what has kept me so quiet as well, well and the hopes that maybe, just maybe I would eventually get what I paid for. frown.gif
