I don't think we should go and bash Coomer for losing interest in something he no longer has, that is completely understandable to me.

I think we should be thankful he says he would keep the site running and that the mass of 6gc knowledge wont wither away. I really doubt we'll see the day where we will get updates again, but really guys, isn't having AT LEAST the website good enough? We should be appreciative that Coomer has taken the time to fix the site the last few times it has crashed and that he promises that 6gc will still be here tomorrow.

It would be great if he would appoint someone who has the know-how and such to work the back end; but I am really overall glad and breathe a sigh of relief everyday when I see the front page.

wow ha crazy. I didnt know all of this was happening until I started reading this whole topic about 20 min ago. Ya I think nthis website is fine the way it is. Yes some updates here and there would be nice and about 2 more pics on our profile would be good. Ya Coomer has lost all interest in 6gc community frown.gif Hopefully things work out for the best and he hands over some of his admin control to other members.

I'm happy with the website being up for sure, and that's my fear...that one day one of my homepages won't be found anymore. kindasad.gif

The solution to the problem is so simple.

Dump this site, everyone move to pedalroom, flex our wings, take over, and can call it Celicaroom

I will return one day.

I vote that the admin rights be handed to someone else. I completely understand how busy Coomer is, so with the best of interest in mind for both him and 6gc, he should let someone else own the site. That way he won't have to worry about repairing this site if it goes down and we don't have to worry about this site disappearing. Both sides win.

>just put some pedals on the celica on the wheels and take the brakes off, call it a day

I already have pedals on my Celica, they're called gas, brake, clutch and dead. laugh.gif

If Coomer's willing to share sysadmin rights, I'd be happy to help. I'd probably initially want to share it with someone else on here though, since there's a lot of updating that needs to be done. If Lagos were down to help and Coomer set up the permissions, I think we could get the site dusted out and cleaned up pretty nicely!

Coomer, if you read this - as for the chat, I've got a chat running that's built for phpbb3 and so far as I know hasn't caused any issues w/my hosting server (I'm sure I'd hear about it if it did). https://blueimp.net/ajax/

or just put a redirect onto the 6gc /chat index to http://www.griffgirl.com/forum/chat/

lol as I was adding that reply, the site went down for about 5 minutes I think
Id rather have a few ads here and there to make some income to get a admin that will update the needs/wants of the site...

Anything I can do to help, I will... but it might be a good 6months until we hear back from him about this.

or the site crashes....whatever comes first.
at this point, it is what it is.
we'll sit here, crying and moaning about the site, and chris will just do what he wants, when he wants.
its been that way for a few years now, we've (IE, I) have just been doing the job, keeping the site as calm as i can, and he pops in once every six months or more, and looks like the hero.
its re-goddamn-diculous is what it is.

you can propose whatever you want. until somthing happens, its all talk.
a back up site, without all the info this site has, is usless, IMO. if someone can keep and up to date backup of the site, 100%, thats great, but i dont see that happening, and without the info this site has, and its member base, any other website is gonna be pretty much a waste of time.

even if we were to start a new site, we'd loose alot of the base membership we have now, its just how it goes. its exactly what happen with celica.net back in the day. (which became celicatech)

what we REALLY need to do, is to get chris to help us set the site up on a new server, that has nothing to do with his other sites, and then have people like griffy, and art help us get this site back on track, and moving forward.

I see what you mean, and of course that would be most preferable, but I just don't see that happening. People also carry knowledge, however...I just think it would be a good backup plan in case that the site can't get transferred to another server, or else disappears.

'97 ST\ Eibach \ KYB \ Kenwood \ Alpine \ Cusco \ OEM+[sold 10/18]'93 MX-5LE
well we can come up with a plan!

If the site ever crashes everybody can meet in the celicatech 6th gen section to later discuss possibilities. At least its a good start.

not knowing where to start is the problem.

Yeah I totally agree. No need for backup sites. It would be just a waste of time at this point.
If this place ever goes down, we will meet up on other celica sites and setup a plan to make something new. In the mean time we just have to figure out how to save this place as it is.

If the site goes down or something, I'll help to setup a new site, no problem. Domain registration and hosting is about $120/year, so if I could get help w/the initial startup from site members, were we to get to that point, I can work on getting advertising to pay for the site for subsequent years so the site is self sufficient financially. We just need to come up with a domain name. 6gcelica (dot) com, anyone? It's available.
lol, bit premature perhaps tongue.gif

I think Coomer is still doing alright keeping this place maintained for now.

From the looks of it, no one has complained about errors or anything of that sort for quite a while (that I know of).

this all makes me sad, it would suck if my homepage didnt come up one day, this site has changed so much about my car and all the knowledge that i have found out about my car, this site is amazing it has everything, its gonna be a sad day when this site does not work, but im down for 6gcelica.com, i would be down for a membership fee or helping with the start up fee to get another site and just copy the stickies to that site, i know that we could have at least 40 people including i that want this site to be what it can be, but we all know it will most likely never happen, so i agree with griffgirl either taking over this site or running a new celica site. anyone else?

I think having three or four people with sysadmin rights makes a lot of sense. I would be very willing to put my name down as long as at least two others also have rights (I have a very busy work life and don't want an AWOL period to cause problems for others). I also have some mysql, php, smarty, perl and python skills (my day job) so might be able to add a few little features from time to time.

BTW, if anyone has an email address for Chris, please can you PM me it. I have his @6gc.net address but mail to that address is bouncing.

I agree though, a backup plan is good to have but let's not all go into hysterics over this. Nothing's actually even happened other than chat being pulled. I mean, we're still here, aren't we?
Hey guys, just hopping back in after thinking for a while. I've spent a few weeks contemplating what to do and discussing it with my girlfriend (who is on your guys' side and won't leave me alone about this), and though I haven't made any final decisions, I have been thinking hard about what to do.

I'm actually going to spend the next hour or so looking into adding another admin and the implications there. Off the top of my head, I know that there are several powerful administrative features that could potentially bring down the server by accident, so I'm investigating that. I'm also looking into how I can add another linux user on the server with access to the 6gc source code, database, etc. That's a fairly large sysadmin task I think, but I'm going to look into it right now.

So yeah, still thinking, but I'll post again soon with more details.
