Suggestion: Members Ride/Car diaries - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #71107 96 posts Started by whatthe
I propose the creation of a back-up site, and letting EVERYBODY know of it. Put dedicated members from here in charge of it (I nominate Michelle, being the sexiest beast of us all, to run the website since she knows how). That way, if this page ever comes up as site not found...we at least have a meeting place to try and recover information and membership. If need be, we can make that the new 6gc.net in case this site fails. We need a place to carry on this community.

If we make a "backup site" we might as well just make a new site to move onto on our own. Problem with things like that is that we will loose a lot of members as some people will either not get the memo or not want to move.

This similar thing happened with celica.net back in the day. The moderators had issues with the sites owner not being involved, so one day they just had enough an created celicatech, copied any important posts over, and deleted just about everything on the old site.

If this place ever explodes, I'll probably just be on celicatech.

Worst part about all of this is that I sent chris a msg over twitter saying that 6gc doesn't know what its like to have a sys admin, and sadly he just ignores that and any msgs people send him about this site and doesn't even bother to come in here to see whats going on.

The only solution to this problem is out of our hands. As long as Coomer is the Admin we all have to live with the site's current settings. Perhaps someone should contact him and offer to buy out the site.

I am getting paid friday..

No, I just propose a blank forum. Nobody needs to sign up over there, but in case sh!t does hit the fan here, we know where to go. Know what I mean?

Yeah 5 people would remember it and everyone else wouldn't know what happened. Plus staring a new forum from scratch is rough, not to mention that it costs money for hosting and the form license.

What if we all join together and all send him a message on pedalroom or twitter or anywhere?

In all honesty, I think Coomer should hand the site off free of charge to Manny. This site has zero advertising and generates no income. Its only value is its loyal users that made it what it is over so many years.

The saddest part about all of this is that the changes that people want are 5minutes and 3 mouse clicks away from happening. And yet we can't even get that much to happen.

But really, not bad jeff, not bad
Sorry guys, I'm a terrible admin.

I simply can't find the motivation to work on 6GC any more. My other big site, my girlfriend, and my job consume all of my attention. I'm still as busy as ever, except I sleep a lot less now so I can get everything done. It's 12:41am right now - I have to be up at 4am to finish up some last minute work.

6GC is currently on a stable server along with a couple of my other sites. I have great incentives to keep the server up, as well as a responsibility to at the very least keep this site up. That's why when it's down, I do fix it. When the chat was bringing down the server, I had to remove it. I owe it to you guys to make sure the awesome amount of knowledge and community that this site contains doesn't disappear.

About the chat, it's a very old piece of software, and it's written in a way that it isn't efficient, especially given the technologies available today. I should have re-written it, but I just do not have the motivation and spare time to do so. Realistically, it probably won't come back online - the server cannot handle it and re-writing it is a ton of work. About other feature requests, again, I don't have the spare time and drive to work on this site, or several of my other sites.

I'm sorry. I don't know what to do. I've got to sleep, but I'll think about this...

New Toyota project coming soon...

Chris, none of us care about the broken chat feature. We just want a system admin/owner to be around to make even the simplest site requests that the community asks for (adding a new forum, or promoting mods or whatever). The type of stuff that takes 5mintues of an interested administrators time to do. With you being not interested anymore, it prevents the community from growing.

I know you promise to pay the bills and keep the lights on, but honestly a lot of us are worried that the guy paying the hosting bill has zero interest and engagement in the site, one day it could just go away without notice.

its ok to sleep, i do it sometimes, but is there another way we can help, i mean some changes can be done by someone who knows, and pretty sure somebody in the site, can do it.

This site has the potential, lets not waste it. We are doing things with cars that have no aftermarket support, and we kick ass....

just going to celicatech does not cut it, and a new site not good. 6gc to me was the first forum i have ever been that is interesting just to read and laugh and learn. I had never touched a car before, in the way 6gc has tought me, i have touched my car in places i would never have dreamt of, lol

somewhere else is just that, somewhere else.

We dont need state of the art forum, we need the simple stuff. Pics, ability to change things, etc.

Coomer, good to see you posting, I have to say. Now, while you're here, why not make a deputy admin? Again, I think Michelle (GriffGirl) should be put in charge of managing the web site as far as modifications and code goes. That way, Coomer will still be in control, but then there's somebody to take care of our requests, and there are quite a few.

i know there is no income or advertisment, but whenever i do post up a new mood or status on myspace or facebook i put 6gc.net after every post....and almost everyone asks me about and goes and checks it out! smile.gif
so i mean i try to a certain extent, but no where near enough! and thats what is really sad...

I don't think that's what lagos meant by advertising. I think he means that the site doesn't have banners and pop-ups for other companies showing up anywhere on the site. Other websites make money by advertising for a company on their website somewhere. But 6gc doesn't do that, which is nice, but since we don't have that, 6gc.net doesn't generate any income.
Coomer I wouldn't call you a terrible admin. Just a very busy admin.

from my experience on updating the sticky threads I begin to understand the amount of time & effort that goes in to do work, create new features etc (as you can see I've only done 2 so far frown.gif)

I think we were all worried that, you where not coming on here or not resonding to messages and where worried that this place could close down. But its nice to know that this place will stay up.

I just want to point out that this forum just runs Invisionboard software. There is really no hard coding needed. Its all done through a web interface. You just need someone with admin rights to do things like update the car of the month, add a new forum, etc... basic everyday stuff thats needed.

IMO Chris was pretty dismissive about this issue.. I really think this site will be terminated before updates occur. might as well just live with the site the way it is guys.

+1 It's just basically a template and someone has to fill in the blanks. Nothing too complicated here.

^ here
IMO deputy admin is one and only way to go... and if it's in good hands everything would be perfect! And talking about Michelle, she has those good hands wink.gif. She has my trust (I know my trust is not important in matter of ownership of this site but I wanted to share smile.gif)

No more replicas... This is evolution... This isSS-four:)________[Featured Celica of 6gc.net @ 2010]_________
^ Technically, yes it is. You just bought another Celica, did a transformation etc., so you'll be sticking with your car for a while. You and me and the others that are still attached to their 6GC are the ones that will keep this site alive through activity and participation. I know I'll be around for a while (putting myself on a pedestal here, deal with it wink.gif), and I will damn sure be needing this site for help and information. It just cannot die.

...WOW...

OK so IDK sh*t about computers.

What is someone like me who doesn't know how to help - do?
I am willing to donate if that helps get a "life support system" or some kind of back up.

Seems Coomer Does care by stating he'd keep this on!
It WOULD be nice to know we can have a " new cave " to park the Celicas in seeing how things take up space,files,servers,etc... IF there's a system crash...

Here is proof of how much Coomer cares...
He knows that we are worried and that we are having a discussion in this forum about the problem. He logs in on December 17th, 2009 to make that one single post and doesn't bother to check back in for the past 5 days or so to read any of our replies or questions.

Meanwhile since the 17th the pedal room got:
