Hi guys,

I drive a ST Celica but managed to buy myself the lighted ring that fits around the ignition...having done an extensive search I have found several threads mentioning it is possible to wire it up...but can anybody tell me how to physically connect one around the ignition barrel?

I cannot for the life of me work out how to do this...the barrel of the ignition seams to be too big?

I saw some cracking images of a "red lighted" interior but aiming my question more towards the ST owners on here.

Any help would be appreciated thanks.

What year is the car? I was looking to add them to mine and was told there was a difference between pre and post facelift models. I can't comment on what the difference means though

I tried to do the same, but the light ring I got was from a Caldina, and was too small. There is a black plastic piece that surrounds the ignition barrel, this should be identical to the clear plastic piece that the light ring uses. Find one that matches, and swap.

Cheers for the answers guys...the car is a 1996 UK model. I didn't realise when I bought it that it may not fit...I just thought it would clip over the existing ignition barrel.

I was tempted to try to shave the black plastic to get it to fit but wanted to make it look perfect...I am a stickler for detail.

Maybe I should have bought the black plastic that goes around the ignition as well?

u can find the same light up clear piece from a 5th gen celica aswell its identical, otherwise it must be sourced from a 1994 or 1995 model, you'll have to figure out yourself what you want to do for the correct relays, or if you just want it on with ignition key on, or perhaps headlamp on..

i remember when i had a 1995 model it used to light up when u open the door and then fade away after you've closed it in 3 seconds giving you time to put your key in.

The following image is where my problem is...I cannot seam to fit the clear ring over this black ignition plastic...any ideas would appreciated?

I found the following thread that shows perfectly how the clear ring attaches to the ignition barrel but I am wondering if the barrel on the GT used a smaller part?

On that thread I noticed a member "ArizonaRed" mentioned that they fitted the ring light to the ignition and they had an ST...any input would be great?

Just wondering if anyone had anymore information on this issue?

It's the same piece man look, one is transparent, one is black. u need to replace the black one it doesn't fit on the top, yours should be the same... the clear one comes from 5th gens and 94/95 6th gens, identical piece.

Thanks delusionz for the further input...but looking at the pieces in your picture, I dont have that black plastic piece to do the swop.

I shall get a couple of photos up...not sure if there is a difference in the UK spec version.

Quick update with photos...I don't appear to be able to replace the ring at all. Here are the photos:

If possible...could someone give me the part number for the part in picture number 3 above that fits the lighted ring so I can order one if necessary.

A quick update for now for those who are looking to do the same...looking around for help a guy e-mailed me with some information...he says:


"Hi Chris,

You need to remove the black transponder key ring that you have that goes around the end of the ignition barrel and secure it to the barrel itself with a zip tie as this allows the car to start. If you remove it completly the car will not star as its part of the immobiliser system.

You need to change the ignition barrel for a prefacelift one that has the smaller end on it to allow the illuminated surround to fit.

Its very easy. You just turn the key to the ACC position and press the small button on top of the ignition barrel to remove it from the shaft.

This is the way most people do the conversion and it is the simplest."


As soon as I get this pre-facelift ignition barrel, I shall see what I can do. I don't fancy changing the ignition barrel itself and end up having another key...so between all the parts I should be able to advise others on how I did it.

maybe delusionz you could shed more light on this subject.

I think there is alot on confusion between the model differences...between European, UK, Japan and rest of world models have their slight differences.

I believe delusionz is based in New Zealand so looked to have the correct black plastic piece to start with...it is just a simple swap. In the UK my ST has a totally different ignition barrel plastic but should get a solution next week for others in my position.

Hmm thats odd... I don't have the black piece that you have, the position markings on my ignition barrel are engraved right to the metal, its not a plastic overlay for me.. The clear piece should fit around the whole unit and screw in from the bottom once you have it turned around the right way.

If your black overlay is blocking the clear piece then ur stuffed I guess, JDMs don't come with factory alarms thats why I had a hard time understanding what the problem was, it is a very easy swap for our celicas.

Ahhaaaa....that where the differences are then. Thanks for clearing up how your piece fits onto the barrel delusionz.

I am having a new barrel sent to me, but I am looking to see if I can sand the edges on my black platic one. Once this is done, the clear ignition ring will fit...it is just a question of how much to sand it down and making sure it looks original and not botched around with.

Looking at my ignition barrel plastic...it how a coil of copper wires which I am guessing is linked to the immobiliser system as the car wouldn't start without it.

For those still looking into this thread, I haven't forgotten.

I am having the parts delivered tomorrow so can give a comparison and an idea of what to do...along with some photos to help.

OK...here goes...

1. This is a photo of a "pre-facelift" barrel. This barrel has the engravings on the metal end which is attached to the barrel...my facelift moel has the plastic end:





2. Here you can see the clear ignition ring will fit easily over this:



3. Here is a photo showing my plastic ignition ring which is part of the immobilisation for starting the car...without this it will not start:





4. As you can see the clear ignition ring will not fit over this:



5. Time for some modifications.....firstly you need to split the plastic ignition ring into the two parts.

6. Then cut off the square tab off the plastic ignition ring...see the following photos for reference:





7. Now re-attach this cut off tab back onto the base ring to protect the terminals:





8. Now take the upper ring and sand off the edges...VERY CAREFULLY...so not to go beyond the writing engraved on the edges...it should look like this:





9. Take your time to get it to fit nice and tight into the top of the CLEAR IGNITION RING...there is no need for any glue but you can add a drop on the inner edge...mine didn't need it but I did take my time:





10. Now you want to wrap the bottom pastic ring in a bag, I also taped mine up to protect the copper wiring:





11. Now just reconnect the ignition wiring to this black plastic ring:



12. Now you can use a cable tie and offer up this protected plastic ring under the ignition barrel and secure it...the second photo shows how much it is tucked out the way:





13. Finally...you can now put your trim back on and hey presto:




The only thing to be done is to wire it up...some use the lighter socket, some use the courtesy wires...then you are all done!

yup, thats from a UK with immobiliser. Hope your car still starts

run it off the courtesy light and add a small time delay circuit would be my option. this will keep the light on after the courtesy goes off. set delay with a variable resistor.

any good with electronics? if not there are some timer relays that will do the job nicely

You read my mind...looking into that sort of connection and method of controling the light.

I have done a full LED conversion...including heater controls so used to soldering and such.

I was thinking of doing mine with a 2 way LED, using regular ignition power and the flasher from my aftermarket alarm/immobiliser.

That ignition barrell you have Welsh-Celica still confuses me, I've never seen anything like it.

You would have thought that the models are standard is this department...it looks like there are differences in the prefacelift models and even between UK spec and Euro cars...not to mention USA based and Japanese cars!!!
