I had that problem and it came out to be the cable

I agree, it sounds like a cable or bushing issue more than a trans issue. On the driver side of the car, between the engine and firewall, youll find where the cables attach to the trans. Be sure to check there, check the cables at the shifter itself, and check to make sure the cables move freely. It could be an issue with the selector on the trans but I would guess its more likely to be cables.
