'98 Celica GT: The Continuation.... - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #98163 284 posts Started by NgoFcukinWay

Herro....

I don't think this car really needs that much of an introduction as I'm sure most of you may (or possibly may not) recognize it.

Picked this up from Edgar earlier this week after my last daily was stolen the Friday before Turkey Day and was recovered the following Wednesday in an even ****tier condition than it left. lol So the Celica is going to continue to serve daily duties for me as it did the previous owners.

Anywho, it's been about 9 years since I was last in a 6GC and I'm happy to be back in one. I have a few things planned for it, but trying to prioritize some other plans first before I can set funds aside for the car.

I'd post more pictures, but it's cold as bawls and it's raining/snowing/sleeting down here and I've been working 15 hour days.

I'll update mine if you update yours. lol

It drives.... good. lol It's fun. Not as quick as the Poopra, but it's enough to zip me around traffic. I'm trying not to scratch the mod itch because there's a few things I want to change, but the Supra comes first since I'm "almost done" with it. If I do find some badass deals on stuff that I do want, I may just hop on it first.

I definitely will!

-Alex {](O_o)[}1993.5 Toyota Supra....with stuff........sorta broken....1998 Toyota Celica....this one, too, has stuff........broken....yeah...definitely broken....
So, I finally was able to get the car up in the air to check out what's going on underneath. Looks like I have some work cut out for me, but it's ok....sorta... Kind of expected it. There's a few spots of surface rust here and there that I need to take care of with either some primer or POR15. Main concern is one of the mounting points on the rear subframe for one of the stabilizer bars/arms thing. I'm hoping the rust isn't too bad there where I can just sand it down and clean it up.

One of the rear springs is experiencing some surface rust as well. Debating if I wanna replace with a new spring/strut combo or get coilovers for it.... Bags would be cool doe.... Stuntin' on bags of disappointment with my GT-2!

The mounting hanger for the exhaust by the muffler completely rusted off, so there's a quarter-sized hole sitting there and the exhaust is just now chilling out. May either replace it with another custom 3" exhaust utilizing an oval section under the axle or picking up an HKS Silent Hi-Power or a Fujitsubo exhaust for it.

Car is leaking oil in a few places: Valve covers and turbo oil line for sure. With that said, I ordered a complete engine gasket overhaul kit to replace all seals for the engine. Also ordered some viton valve steam seals and the 2 Hose from Hell pieces. Figured while I was at it, might as well give it a solid tune-up with a new water pump & belt along with an oil pump. My mechanic is going to have a field day with this one. lol Do need to sort out the temp dial AC/Heater situation though with Houston's literal bipolar weather.

For the time being, got the Celica a Christmas present with some S2 JDM tail lights. Need to go borrow some tools now to switch them out since some turd wads thought it was cool to steal my last daily and take my tools that were in it. :\

The Recaros are for the Supra since the driver's seat motor is going out. Just need to order seat rails and sliders for it. They may find their way into the Celica at some point assuming I can find a deal on another set of Recaros, Brides, Braums, or Status seats. Both front seats do need to be recovered though and that may end up being the route I go as it's cheaper and I can do the work myself.

Aside from that, enjoying the mess out of the car and bringing disappointment to all who ask "Is that all-wheel drive?" I can see the light slowly fade from their eyes when I say, "Ngo....."

Quick pic with the poopra before it goes off for a new clutch. Spec stage 2 clutch in the Celica made the stock clutch in the Supra feel non-existent. That was weird.... lol

Hmmm, if you could find some new old stock Tein or Tanabe coil-overs. I looked at some point not long ago and found some Tein ones. Otherwise it's all Taiwanese parts bin stuff as far as new sets go.

2001 Miata LS 5-speed
I've considered used coil overs, but am concerned about remaining life on them and at what point they'll need a rebuild. If it comes down to it, I'm juggling between BC Racing or Fortune Autos. Either one with the Swift Springs upgrade. By the looks of it, Blitz still offers coilovers for this chassis as well.

-Alex {](O_o)[}1993.5 Toyota Supra....with stuff........sorta broken....1998 Toyota Celica....this one, too, has stuff........broken....yeah...definitely broken....
Sadly the Blitz appear to be done by BC now, I had found them and got excited but upon closer inspection of photos and specs they're just like the Megan and BC stuff. There's some new old stock Tein out there, just a quick eBay search: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1994-1999-Toyota-C...jDh&vxp=mtr

I think I found them cheaper on places like Amazon.jp and Rakuten, but rather or not you could get them to ship to the U.S. I dunno.

2001 Miata LS 5-speed
Glad to see you are taking good care of it.

Most of the rust that you are seeing on the rear sub frame should just be on the surface. I would just sand it down and treat it with POR15. Same deal with the springs. They are not that old so unless you want to upgrade the suspension for performance reasons, I wouldn't mess with it. The exhaust was made with aluminized steel at least 10 years ago, so I'm not surprised that you found some rust issues with it. I would honestly just drive it until it fully deteriorates.

I would recommend replacing the power steering pump too. Thats where 90% of the oil mess you are seeing is coming from. It was always on my to-do list.
Doing the front and rear control arm bushings would also be a good idea and a cheap DIY project.

As for the climate control, I had an issue with the temp adjustment getting stuck and not wanting to go full cold/hot. I disconnected the cable from the coolant line in the engine bay and just manually set it by hand to the temp I wanted. I think the issue might be with the climate control unit. Should be a pretty easy and cheap fix to replace it with a used unit.

If the climate control unit is the issue, I believe I have a spare. Needs LED’s or new bulbsbut otherwise functional. I have your other stuff ready to ship so I can add that to it if you’d like.

I found the Blitz on RHDJapan's site. But if they are BCs, then I may end up just going with BCs or the Fortune Auto route.

I'm doing what I can. It's probably gonna make me broke for a little while, but should make the car pretty solid when all is said and done.

That's what I figured with the rust. I'll find some time after the new year to tackle it. I'll need to order some POR15 first along with an air grinder with a sanding disc to make life easier. I just don't want it to progress. A suspension overhaul is in the plans though for both cars. It's just going to take a while. The idea of coilovers is up in the air until it gets time to address it. The coilovers in the Supra did spoil me though...

And that's the plan with the exhaust. I was debating about running open downpipe for a while for ****s and giggles.

That's what I forgot to order....... I'll replace the seals in the pump to see if that'll help it. When I checked fluid levels to top it off, it didn't require a whole lot. A couple of ounces at most. :\ I'll figure it out once it's all taken apart though.

That's what I ended up doing as well with the heater. Kind of an inconvenience, but it is what it is. Edgar said the AC was charged and full but when I switch to AC and close the heater valve, it doesn't blow cold.... Weird, but I'll look into that later as well.

Send dat bish. I may have a friend help me tackle the LED mods for the lights as I'm not 100% confident in my soldering skills. May see if new buttons and knobs are available from Toyota as well like they are for the Poopra.

Try moving the coolant valve adjuster thats in the engine bay by hand. Its probably on full hot, so you are getting ac and full heat.
AC always worked fine when I had the car.

rust you say.. dont grind the rust, chemically treat it. get rid of the rust and not the metal....

blasting would be the most ideal... but sometimes cant get it.. chemically treat it and then do por15 to seal it...

Its true. With POR15 you just want to wash off any dirt and then you paint directly over the rust.

15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned
I thought por15 really only sticks to bare metal.

1995 GT::::Diffusing the Situationエキサイティングカーレーシングチーム!march2010 COTM:6GCfeature2014:january2015-2016-2018 COTM
Nah, it doesn’t like bare metal. It sticks best to rust.

Well, I reattached the arm to the adjuster just to see what it does. Went back in the cabin and cranked it from hot to cold. It closed the valve, but still blew warm air. Turned the knob to hot, it stayed close and blew meh air. -_- maybe a newer-ish control unit can be the fix. I'll take a look at it when the car comes back after being resealed. Weather is getting colder and wetter for the next few days, so it's not going to be a problem at the moment.

Copy that. I saw on their website that they have a 3-step process/chemicals: Clean, prep, and coat.
