s54 quaife - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #95020 10 posts Started by Arturio55
Bought a s54 tranny from a guy in Minnesota. He says it has a quaife. It definitely has an lsd, just want someone familiar with their fair share of differentials to confirm it is in fact a quaife.

If nobody can tell, how hard would it be to crack open that side of the tranny so i can look for a part number or insignia? Not familiar with tranny guts so i would rather not mess anything up.

Any other advice or opinions welcome. Pics below.

What type of Lsd is the quaife? Mechanical clutch type? As this is what my TRD LSD is and it has no bars just a gap like yours

The quaife is a helical, mechanical gears.

I just installed a helical into an s54.

Taking apart the trans is not really a good way to go about checking. There's a lot that has to be removed before your reach the diff. I documented a good portion of my rebuild so you might get some answers there:

I would just send a picture of the axle hole to quiafe and ask them

Found some stuff from some researching I did a year ago:

Early S54 helical LSD

Late Model S54 helical LSD

Common S54 open differential

this pic is so deceiving, this is exactly what the MR2 turbo with LSD trans looks like

I know, the e153 viscous diff has a bar just like the s54 open diff. Except the e153 has a thicker bar. This caused a TON of confusion on the forums over the years..
Thats my transmission I sold you, it is a quaife, pull the mechanical speedometer drive that I have on it and take a peek inside, do not open it up unless you know the torque specs and your familiar with working on manual trans. The one I used is the one for the 2zzge transmission which is the same parts number as the s54.
