timing belt issues - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #91014 16 posts Started by garin
ok so i have my car almost back together. i have cylinder 1 at tdc and my cam gears on the mark. i get the tensioner in and then turn it over with a wrench to double check my work. it all check out, but when i crank the car with the key my belt is off by a few teeth. the belt seems snug, no slack in it. but the tensioner has been off a few times. should i buy a new tensioner, or do i have other issues? thanks.

Sounds like a tensioner issue to me.

i think so too. im gonna order one to be safe. it is running now with about a tooth off.

it might be the timing belt. have you checked it for missing groovs.

I had the same problem when I did mine. The issue was that I was using those little notches on the cams as a guide, like everyone says to do. This is a mistake, because its hard to judge when they are perfectly straight.

You should really go by the teeth on the cam gears.
Use a paint pen to mark where those teeth marks are directly on the gear. Then use the pen to mark where the belt thinks tdc is. After you do this, it will be very clear how far off you are.

I'm pretty sure joe bought a new tensioner when I did his belt. All of the pulleys are new too. You should be able to just reuse everything.

Do you see a lot of slack in the belt as the engine is running?

advance the timing by a few teeth and when you crank it, itll jump back to where you want it to be

i got it timed correctly. not sure what the deal was.. lol the paint pen trick is a good one!

1. make sure all your gears are lined up to the correct timing mark (use the paint pen to help)
2. make sure the belt is snug in the gear teeth
3. when you pull on the pulley to slide the tensioner in make sure nothing moves and the belt is secure in the gears
4. install the tensioner and hand spin the crank to double check your work

Glad it helped you out. Its really the only way to do a belt on these engines.
