Because everyone has the kouki tail lights, i'd like to try something new. Drilling 80 holes with 80 leds, and 10 hours work on 1 taillight, is this the result.
This week i try to build the unit on the car, and then we will see how it look like.
@ toyota123: Here in the Netherlands we dont have to put on the lights 24/7. So i put them on when its dark. They replace the normal backlights. But i keep the original brakinglight.
@Special Edy: I drilled the holes in the backside of the tab, and thats just next to the bumpy texture, see the next pictures below.Yupp every led got a own resistor. 80 leds---> 80 resistors. I create groups of 20.
Would've been kind of hard to use SMD's in this instance. For one the curvature of the line would've made it a pain, and the fact the holes were drilled out and the LED's inserted would be more difficult with a SMD. Unless you baked open the light and could get SMD strips to fit into the crevice he used, that would be a little easier overall. The only thing I would've done differently on this install would've been to make a lot of arrays in series and wire them in parallel to greatly reduce the amount of resistors and soldering needed.
Looks cool and has a lot of possibilities. Would work great as a stop light or as a tail light. Kind of like the idea of using it as a stop light, really get people's attention.

The SMD's can be cut every 5cm or every 3 LEDs (depends on the type tho) and then without any problems just connected to + and - wires. Additionally you can cut those 3 in and arrange them in whatever fashion as long as you keep the circuit the same as before (+-+-+-). They are a lot smaller so the hole drilled for them will be too. They could of been mounted the same way he did with encased LEDs, just not taking up that much space and time soldering each.

The last time I saw a SMD LED strip the way they're spaced it would've needed cut after every diode for the curves on the light. I like the flexibility offered by individual LED's(rather SMD or traditional), but I also like the convenience of SMD LED strips for covering large areas instantly. Haven't looked lately, but it'd be nice to find a tightly spaced SMD LED strip.
I bought a long roll or flexible LED strip which can be cut to any length in when I was planning on doing something similar. Personally I would have removed the lense and put a stip in for a cleaner look but this method would be easier.
