okay here we go im starting my 5sgte thread im planning to go with the 3sgte crank instead of the 5s crank. does any body know exactly how this would work and if it does work. i know pressure2 was doing a big bore set up for someone like this and was wondering if you could use the 3sgte crank and rods.
5sgte here i come - 6G Celicas Forums
you are going backwards by using a 3S-GTE crank.

Ya I know its a little but different of a set up but I want one that no one else has so it will be a 5sgte with a 87.5 mm stoke instead of 91 with the 5s I'm still trying to debate on which one to go with because I know if you go with the 3sgte crank you are going to have a 2.019 litter or something like that but it will be more rev happy.. Ugh I just.don't know. Tell me what you guys think.

an oversquare 5sgte setup is a nice setup, and is very reliable while also reving easier and making more power than a normal "stroker" setup.

those are the threads that i got alot of my info from, and the reason that jim wanted to build his setup that way.
if you click on mr2joshs' name, then click on "all threads started by.." you can get alot more info on his setups and whatnot, with dyno results and all that show why we liked the idea.

Ya I tried getting into mr2oc but it keeps saying my account is being activated and it may take up to 72 hours to let me in and its been longer then that

those threads are full of good info, im not saying it cant be done but the money involved, i dont see the justification.

ya but this is minnesota lol.. we have like nothting around here. i found one though from my dads shop buddy with an mr2 87.5 mm cp forged pistons, 8:5:1 comp, 3sgte rods, 5sfe crank. pretty sure thats the whole 5sgte for 800 bucks haha.. my luck i guess
so now i have to worry about if i do pull the 5sfe crank out and put in the 3sgte crank... hmm what to do....
Which intake manifold would I use for this set up?
You'd use a 3sgte intake and exhaust manifold since you're using a 3sgte head.
Correct me if I'm wrong but by going with the long block and short stroke crank won't the block have to be decked to the 3sgte piston height?

I thought I heard somewhere that you.can't use the 3s intake because it goes out to far or something like that. And I don't think so it just doesn't reach the deck

Huh? if you're using the 3sgte head the 5sfe intake manifold simply won't bolt on, so you just have no choice really.
anywho if you're going to destroke the 5s block you need at a bare minimum to deck the block down to the 3s piston height or get custom pistons where the piston pin location is moved downward on the piston to raise the piston up to the 5s deck height. The 5s block is longer than the 3s to acommodate the longer stroke. That's why CP makes custom pistons for 5SFE crank in a 3SGTE block, because the pistons have their pins raised to lower the piston down to the 3sgte deck height.
I could be wrong, so anyone can feel free to correct me but that's what makes sense to me.

Ya I knew that intake manifold thing didn't sound right and for the second part I absolutely have no idea itd be a good question for pressure2
you dont deck the block (other than the absolute minimum needed to ensure straighness anyway.) ats racing and a couple vendors on the mr2 boards stock the custom pistons to use the 3s crank in the 5s block, and about every known 3s piston supplier will make them with no issue.
if you cant figure out which intake manifold you need to use, your not ready for the project, period.
to me, its just common sense, if your using the 3s head, you'd be using a 3s intake manifold, right?

Ya I realized that I looked back through that thread I was reading and it was something totally different. I read it wrong.

how much extra meat is there between the cylinders of a 5s-fe compared to a 3sgte gen3?
I came up with 2069cc for 87.5mm bore and 86mm stroke
be easier starting with a gen4 block to do that.
if you have to grind a 5s crank to fit a 3s block, how you gonna add the meat back to the 3s crank

You grind the crank to fit the 3s RODS, not the block. The main journals on both 3s and 5s are of the same diameter.

Yeah I decided not to go with the oversquare set up until later since I already.have the 5s crank fitted to 3s rods. And running Cp pistons pictures should start coming this weekend

well now that my build thread is dead its time to bring it back to life.. im planning to go with the over square since i never got what i wanted from that guy my dad knew because he never sent them after i paid for them.. but thats besides the point my car has just been sitting for 2 years waiting for the beast of the 5sgte i had promised it so lately i got a great opportunity to get a 2000 5sfe camry hehe lucky me.. well i get that next week and within the next year im going to be buying things for my swap. being said, caldina head is my go to for a 2000 camry am i right? ive seen a guy i dont know what forum but hes kinda the same setup going on but i want to oversquare the setup and see how the caldina likes that. its going to be a long and painful year waiting for this beast of an engine grow. but when it goes in im going to have myself a beast and thats what i wanted my little st to be.
so let me know thoughts, or questions pertaining to the build.
I'm going to be posting pictures of the camrys engine and transmission as soon as I get it either Thursday or Friday it has a lot of miles so I'm going to replace everything when I have it out to build it of course
so I've been researching some stand alone ecu's anybody got some suggestions that are some great ecu's that worked for them?
