Since its not installed, the easiest way to check is to look where the axles sit in the trans. If there's a thin bar and you can see through to the other side, it's an open diff. Yours looks like it has LSD.

Edit: how many miles are on the trans?

i think the tranny had about 90k on it, but the 3rd / 4th gear syncro has gone (cant remember which one lol)

Yes. The first picture is my S54 with an open diff, the second picture is my S54 with LSD.

With 90,000 miles on the transmission, I'd be worried about the health of that LSD. Helical LSD's wear out and start acting like an open diff between 60-90,000 miles. Sticking it with your 3S may be just a minor upgrade without refreshing the differential. Luckily, you'll be opening up the trans to replace the syncros anyway.

Hey guys I just realised that my s54 is and s54-06D I also purchased and e153 gearbox because i thought my s54 was non LSD will the shafts of the S54 fit my e153 tranny or do i need to buy mr2 iners and st185 outers anyway?

also how much power (tourqe) can the s54 06D tranny hold?

Does any one know?
helical LSD: behave like an open diff when one wheel is totally unweighted, but "never" wear out, and generally are quieter and have easier driveability

Clutch type LSDs wear out. Gear-type LSD don't. Their only "wear" is a failure that breaks the gears.

Where do you find the tranny code anyways?

on the chassis plate in the engine bay - non usa though

the Japanese/nz new ST204 are S54-02A, so I'd assume it would be the same
