Hey guys, now hear me out I LOVE MY 1996 CELICA GT!! I absolutley love it, its never given me problems and I love modding it, but.. but I was looking at the Eclipse GSX (awd turbo, 200hp) and its almost the same price, its a little more expensive, and the insurance is a lot more.. I was wondering what you guys think of that comparison and if you guys know any pros / cons for each car.. despite the obvious of course! I love my 6gc but Im scared I might trade it in and buy a GSX on day, talk me out of it! >frown.gif>
just the sexy style of the celica should have u covered. with the money u would spend on insurence do sum engine mods. ull be set.

GSX is a nice car man, I was looking at a GST before I bought my celica. My words of advice would have to be.... you can easily make a RS or GS look like a GSX... its the poser factor. While a 6gc is one of a kind and rare, yeh a gsx is too, but in my area there a 3 GSX that I know of and god only knows how many fakes, while there are only 2 6gcs (including mine). The fact that 6gc's are sexier and cooler than an eclipse was the deciding factor for me. That and the Fast&Furious fall off crowd don't really know about them like they do eclipses. >biggrin.gif>

The Eclipse GSX will require much more maintenance and care than a sixth generation Celica will. It's got a turbo engine that commonly has problems if not well cared for mated to a fairly fragile tranny. Both are nice cars though. The Eclipse will be faster, but I think the sixth generation Celica may handle better(not sure, but it is much lighter than a GSX), and personally, I like the way the sixth generation Celica looks more, even though GSXs do look sweet.

New Toyota project coming soon...
get the gsx

nothing wrong with the car if you take care of it.

6gc is by far more reliable because it is a toyota, it is NA, and AWD makes things more complex

gsx is a lot faster, with great mod response and good aftermarket

Your stupid to NOT trade it in.

Though the Celica to Eclipse ratio is like 1 to 1,000,000, GSX's are decently rare. GSX's have alot of very cheap HP modifications, easily accessible to a 400HP mark for the same cost as a stock 3SGTE Swap. Will destroy anything off the line, looks good stock and slammed (can't really say the same for a Celica), and just have ALOT more aftermarket than our cars. If your serious about modifications, Eclipse is for you.

I almost bought one, but it had too many miles for a '99.
i've looked into gsx's a lot lately. all the concerns about fragile and faulty turbo's are due to CRANKWALK. there's a lot of 2nd gen 4g63 dat hab this problem and mitsu and chrysler won't recall it.
the crankwalk problen once you get it is not fixable most of the times. very few have been fixed. u'll prolly hab to swap. i've heard about cases that get crankwalk even after swaps. so look into that.

signs of crankwalk:
clutch gets stuck on the bottom.
trouble shiftin gears after hard left turn.
"tick"ing noise around the timing belt area.
those are juss some signs and the ones that happen towards the end.
again all the mechanical troubles buggin the 2nd gen eclipses are due to crankwalk.thrust bearings, crankshaft, rod bearing, thrust sensor, timing belt, and many more.

now that my celi is dead im lookin into gsx too. and the biggest drawback is this crankwalk issue. this issue seems to be most prevalent in the 95,96, some 97 and some 98.
99's havent come up wif the problem yet. but never know.
one fix to this seems to b a swap with the 1st gen 4g63, which was built slightly different and it seems to b free from crankwalk. plus it's got a better blow off valve.
hope this helps you.
That's nothing... If I can't find a good AE86, I'm probably gonna either get a 7th gen GT-S, or a *gasps* 2002+ Honda Civic SI hatch.

With the SI hatch, simple bolt-ons and a Hondata flashed ECU, them fuxorz are fast. Great torque, great top-end... beautiful sounding engine...

crankwalk is not that big of a problem.

the only time your hear about it is from people that drive the cars hard and modify them.

and thats only a few people on forums that say they have it.

people hype it up a lot.

the gsx is a great car! get it!

i know a few people that have them and didnt get crackwalk.

if you do get crankwalk, then all you have to do is swap in a motor from the 1st gen DSMs. you can buy one of those for around 600$ and it would be a lot cheaper then doing a 3sgte swap to your celica. i kind of wish i bought one when i was shopping for a new car.

GSXs are nice cars. one big thing about them though is they might as well not even have a back seat. they have ZERO leg room in the back. other than that they have a very celica-like interior, though the seats arent as comfortable. overall though very nice car.

Have you considered an mr2?? other wise the gsx is a sexy car, just a little over done.
great care... i almost got an 2nd gen eclipse but this girl told me it's a bitches car... and i didn't know much about the car just liked the way it looked... but knowing what i know now i would have bought it.. but then again i might not have the celi now.. but if you can get your hands on a GSX or even a GST i say go for it..

My bud calls my celica a girls car. I like to htink my celica isn't a girl car. I think its all about the color, how you take care of it, and what you do to it(IE, does it smell perfumy, have flowers hanging from the mirror.. all that female crap they do).... but then again, i might just be fooling myself into thinkin its not a girls car

lemme do a little dance that im sure any gsx will gladley show you as well

duh duh duh duh dunt. crank walk >biggrin.gif>

edit: my friend has a gst pushin 300 ponies, and he is suppsoed to run 13 flat, but it hasnt been out of the shop long enuff to run in 6 months

statistically it is a girls car. statisticly on average the sport compact market and the SUV market are girls markets... but whos keeping track? girls own everything nowadays (shakes head in disgust)

The 4G63 is not all that reliable. My brother owns a 95 TSI Talon, which is the exact same thing as GSX Eclipse, and he drives it maybe 3 months out of the year. The car is just ridiculously unreliable. Every mod you put on it makes the car less and less reliable. It might be good stock, but if you're serious about performance then you better buy somethin else to drive on the side when your car is in the shop or garage. Besides, it's a proven fact, those cars break down waaaaaay too much.
i aint puttin the car down in any sense. im really lookin to buy one, but i honestly dun know if crankwalk is all hyped up. i hope it is. cuz i dun wanna get it. for now im juss dreamin of turbo and 4wd handling. hm~~~~ sweet

one more thing. crankwalk was found on completely stock cars that have been taken care of in a religious manner. i talked to this baby-boomer aged guy, he had all oil changed done on time and all the other maintenance. he never raced it. and got crankwalk around 50k miles.

i am awesome
so we all agree that the the only care that are woth doing any mods to are any cars that are have a toyota powerplant in it? (Supra, Corolla, celica (exc,, 6gc non turbo) MR2)

UNRELAIBLE

the trannies goes in gsx's so much u might as well buy in bulk. i have a friend who has kileld 5 thats right 5 trannies.....and the last 2...were racing trannies. and my rommate has an awd tlaon tsi (exact same car) and it has something else wrong with it about every week.

however they are fun as hell when they run right and take good to mods hp-wise. hell i almost bought one a couple years ago. just be ready to spend a lot of money and have some downtime.

the more power you make, the more stuff will break!

but here is the best part. those care are very cheap and easy to work on. as long as you have a garage and are not afriad to try new things, you will love the car.
somone i know put it best, "DSM: turing normal people into mechanics since 1989".

i almost bought a 90 talon TSI (1st gen DSM) as a project car. i ended up not getting it because i found out my firend ran it with almost no oil in it.

if anything ever happened to my celica, then i would really consider buying a 1g thats in good shape. for very little money you can have that car running 12s.

^^^ parts arent necessarily cheap in DSM's... my friend bought a 97 talon tsi awd and 4th gear went out a little while later...Turns out that other parts of the drivetrain were damaged ( i dont remember how) but anyway basically to get his transmission just REBUILT, cost him 2500...ok u have to remember, AWD trannys are expensive as hell. so yes you may be able to soup the cars up for cheap, but you cant necessarily "fix" them for cheap.... also another tid-bit...i know 3 guys with turbo dsm's... 2 have crankwalk....the ONLY way u can fix this is by swapping the engine....and nobody on this site can just say " oh well yeah all u gotta do is slap a 1st gen motor in it"....easier said than done...i suggest if you are really interested go to dsmtuners.com to check out info on them...my best friend drives a dsm, so i know almost as much about them, as i do about celicas...and yes if you have a dsm you WILL become a mechanic...

The early madel GSX's were more reliable I thought. I know the earlier cars had a stronger version of the 4g. OR so I've read...
eclipse is not a reliable car at all. my friend bought a gst and had to return it on the same day cuz it was giving him problems.

i guess depends on u. if u want a fast car for sunday drives then get the GSX. but if u want a daily car that looks sweet, keep ur celica (its gonna last for a loooooong time).

i think US celicas are girl cars cuz theyre so weak. haha

if only they have the gt4 here, then that car will beat the GSX anyday. >frown.gif>

This post has been edited by poix: Jan 16, 2004 - 1:08 AM

they did have a stronger 4g. i have helped replace, where to begin. I have replaced a head, exhaust manafold, turbo, tranny and intercooler on a 91 eclipse. This all had to be replaced after the car had 152,000 miles on it. This Bit*h ran strong. we had the boost turned up to 18 psi. it had a fuel pump and injectors. After we replaced all those things it is stronger than i have ever felt it. i love dsm's and hope to one day own one. just my experiences.
