Ok someone please help me I'm at a loss here. Pretty much every time I start my car it makes a rattling noise, also when I get up to about 3000rpm it makes the same noise until I shift or left off the gas and let the R's go down a bit. Anyone else have or had this problem and know what it might be? I pulled the valve cover to see if my valves are adjustable...they are not. I have the 1.8L 7AFE motor. Please anything would be appreciated. I have to get this motor to last at leaset until tax time so I can get my 3SGTE...

7a's valve adjustment is with shims on the underside of the lifters. there a pain and really dont have to deal with them unless your rebuilding. i know on mine the injectors are really loud. do you have a stethoscope? if so start the end and listen around with it at the fuel rail, valve cover, block. the reason i replaced mine 2 years ago was rod knock. keep an eye on it and how it drives.

You can buy a set of feeler gauges for around $5 from the autoparts store. I know for certain on the 2.2L 5SFE you need the feeler gauge set that is specifically for valve shims( it has a 45° bend on the end), but Im not sure its absolutely necessary for the 1.8L 7AFE. You have to measure half the valves clearances then turn the engine over 1 full revolution and measure the other half.
If the shims are out of clearance and you decide to swap them yourself, You can then use a large screwdriver to push the valve lifter down so that you can use a small screwdriver and magnet to get the shim out. Next step is to use a caliper tool to measure the thickness of the shims that are out of clearance. You should be able to swap most around to get to the right clearance but you may need to order a few that you dont have.
Anyways its not hard at all, kinda tricky pushing the lifter down with a screwdriver though. A little bit of valvetrain noise is annoying but not necessarily a bad thing. Just try not to let it worry you, all of our four cylinders are noisy as hell.

Now that you mention it running low on oil. It could be a bad bearing, like i said with mine was rod knock.

How good are you with cars? Its alot of work to strip down a motor in the car. Easier to pull it out

I'm decent enough with cars. If I have to pull the motor then so be it. I have a friend with a cherry picker so it's not a big deal. Plus it's not like I don't have a grip load of guys who are all gona be spectating anyways. I already have one guy who is going to help me do whatever I need to do, he just points and tells me what to do next so that way I can learn this stuff...I had a basic idea now it's the getting dirty, greasy and sweaty I have to look forward to lol I'm excited ^_^

WOW! always fascinated to see a girl getting her hands dirty. Not something you see everyday. Depending on your time frame and money situation, i would suggest what i did and am currently doing. Get a spare motor so you can either just drop it in, or do a propper rebuild to ensure everything is ok. in 4 hours you should have the old one out and the new one just about all hooked up. To rebuild a motor takes ALOT more time due to measuring and machining if necessary. Just pulling the crank out to replace the bearings takes 6 hours(pulling motor, and actually getting the bearings in your hand). My 7a is pissing oil past the rings and valve stem seals, so i bought a spare, doing a complete build top to bottom(trying to prove the 7a na can make some power), and when i have everything ready to go ill spend a saturday putting it in. Weight your options. Its good you have friends to help, and 6gc is always here.

Could look into swapping in the 1MZ-FE V6, a few people on here have done it. Personally what I would do, cheaper and parts are readily available.

the noise, is it coming from the top of the engine (the head) or from the lower block? Mine make noise from the block cause it has a bad rod bearing in it.
I also am having the same noise on my 7afe... Its quiets down a little after oil changes but not completely. It also has 210k on so i figured the motors soon at the end of its time and soon its time for a rebuild due to lack of being maintained properly by previous owners

There is a little bit of work you have to do to fit an S series engine into a A series car but it has been done before and you can also find that on here in the stickys! I am rebuilding a 5s as of right now and also thinking of boosting it when I get some miles on the fresh engine
