Top caliper bolt - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #84568 6 posts Started by trevoroq
Hi ,I have replaced all my pads ,but on the rear callipers the top bolt has a rubber grommet in it and no visible means to undoing it, I replaced the pads by undoing the bottom bolt and lifting the calliper but wondered if there is any way to remove the top bolt Thanks

its a metal cap, use channel locks and pop it off (dont squeeze too hard though, turn back and forth while pulling back. it sould come off easy) then you will come to what i think is a 12 mm bolt. (i cant remember exactly.) you wont be able to get a normal socket on it though since its inside of some goofy housing (the caliper) what i did was grind down the walls of a normal socket just enough to fit in there, but not enough that it would snap when you tried to use it. good luck thumbsup.gif

The bolt under the cap does not hold the caliper to the bracket.

It's not necessary to remove it, in fact. The bolt is there to hold the bushing onto the bracket. The caliper slides on the bushing. The only thing actually holding the caliper on that bushing is the little rubber pin boot. Pop that boot off one side or the other and you should be able to slide the caliper off of the bushing, thus seperating the caliper and bracket.

If the caliper is stuck on the bushing, the best way I found to seperate the pieces is by setting the caliper into a vice, then using a punch. Take the cap off, set the punch on the top of the bolt, and hammer away. What you're doing is hammering the bushing out of the caliper, which you'd have to do even if you unbolted the bushing from the bracket first.
you dont need to take the caliper off the bracket, just remove the bottom bolt, flip it up and replace your pads, thats it.

he was asking if there was a way to remove it, not if he needed too tongue.gif

i guess youre right but he was all in the topic of just replacing pads, so thats what I gave. unless his topic said im trying to grease the top pin. thats different or Im trying to replace only the caliper, not the bracket. sometimes the question is not asked correctly, I would assume in the fronts for example he took off both caliper bolts top and bottom, so he might be trying to do the same in the rear but theres only the bottom bolt, and is expecting to take off both again. IDK, so yea you can kinda see how i interpreted it.
