Thanks! I bought the brake master cylinder, going to be installing it today. Hope that fixes the problem. Also looking forward to installing a crank trigger wheel on the crank balancer ("damper", "crank pulley")

hope to do something like this (courtesy of all-trac.net)

This is on a 3sgte.

So I've stumbled upon a couple of issues going on with the car.

Number one and easiest to solve (technically speaking, because the work involved isn't "easy") is that the car is starting backwards sometimes. After wiring up the Megasquirt 2 it's been doing that but it's normal thanks to the ****ty 4 tooth wheel on the distributor. A 36-1 wheel is going to solve that (like the one above).

Second and most annoying is the brakes aren't working. The calipers seem to be sticking (I haven't been able to pinpoint which in particular but I could move the car) Whenever you let off the throttle the car jerks forward as if braking suddenly, and it doesn't roll back on a very slight elevation with the clutch depressed.

The brake booster seems to be noisy as well, so that might be bad as well. It squeals like a pig when you reach almost full brake depressing.

It's also knocking a ton. Even when revving while in idle. We set the timing pretty good with a timing gun (and put the right settings on the MS-II) and it's still knocking.

I think I'm due for an update, so here goes.

I replaced the master cyl... turns out it was bad too, badly rebuilt probably since it was reman.

Brake booster was showing signs of its last minutes. It finally gave way so now I am looking for one. Mechanic quoted $70 for replacing the booster (labor).

Car seems to be running fine, minus a really high idle which I will solve once I get my hands on a backup TB. IACV is stuck open, like on my previous Celi.

Parking brake needs adjustment at the shoes, so I am also going to be doing that.

I had the timing belt replaced, along with the tensioner, idler, water pump, cam seal, crank seal and oil pump seal, a header I bought locally, and the new brake master cyl and brakes bled, all for $294 with everything but the header and brake master included.

Megasquirt needs a tune with the Innovate LC-1 I got. Once thats done, I'm going to be looking into installing a 36-1 trigger wheel on the balancer witha VR sensor dedicated for the MS-2.

We'll see how it all goes.

1993 Celica GT Coupe - sold1994 Celica GT Liftback
I had run into more issues. The MS-II really hates stock REV2 5S-FE ignition. (VR sensor with a 4-tooth trigger wheel really doesn't give it much resolution to work properly)

Currently the car turns on and runs. Brake Booster has arrived and will be changing it sometime this week. I hope I can get some stuff solved by the end of the week. Hopefully next weekend I will be dealing with the ignition.

1. 90-92 5S-FE Rev1 Distributor with a 24-tooth trigger wheel. Will be tapping into its VR sensor for ignition trigger input.
2. Chrysler/Dodge 420a wasted-spark coil

More info when I get stuff done.

Haha that's cool. I'm going to invest in them... I know they're probably a cheap wheel but I really like how they look. I need hubcentric rings. I don't know the measurement of the hub on the wheels...

1993 Celica GT Coupe - sold1994 Celica GT Liftback
the center bore of the rim should be 57.1mm the celica rim center bore is 54.1mm hope that helps

Where did you find that out?

1993 Celica GT Coupe - sold1994 Celica GT Liftback
im pretty sure they are vw rims, which have a 57.1 center bore i have been meaning to measure mine for a while now but have been to busy to.
there should be a gap of 1.5mm all around the center bore

They're not Volkswagen rims, though...

Think he means their specs are for a aftermarket rim for a vw
Not an actual vw rim

Oh. If that's the case then it could be possible.

I really need a digital caliper...

what he said. i do believe the center bore is for vw, the only way to know for sure is to measure.

by the way where did you find the picture of the rim and center cap that you posted

That one?

It's from the ad that I bought it from. Seller put it up but wasn't clear/good quality. I threw away the centercaps, don't like them at all... Two of them were yellowed/cracked.

1993 Celica GT Coupe - sold1994 Celica GT Liftback
yeah i have been looking for a center cap to use as a mold to make some out of carbon fiber, or maybe fiberglass

>So I've bought myself a 1994 GT, black, with NONE of the extra cool stuff (sunroof, foglights, cruise control, automatic climate, 8-speaker etc)...... but who needs that? It's all just extra weight! Here's the background:

The car was bought from a fellow University Student who sold it because there was an issue with the car he couldn't solve.

Nice to see a fellow student here with a car in a similar condition to mine! Mine cost me 1300euros! I'm lucky in that it's got no mechanical issues of great importance other than needing new drive shaft. Here's a pic:

I'm enjoying watching your progress! Keep up the good work!
Euro-specs come with so many cool things like the skirts and splitters... yours looks a lot better than mine haha. Thanks!

any new pics to see how its coming? you fix your brake problem? how bad is your front bumper? iv'e looked all over puerto rico for celica parts but nothing.....como dicen por ahi, solo quedan dos de estos carros, el tuyo y el del diablo!!!

Update:

New struts are in for all four corners. Had to use two different pairs because the fronts that I bought were cartridges, and apparently the previous owner had replaced the fronts with sealed units (Monroe OESpectrum).

The car rides very nice now, pretty stiff. There's two new OESpectrums in the front and two Stagg SHS in the rear. No top mounts as they were still in usable condition, and reused basically everything else. Trying to keep this as cheap as possible because later on I'm going the coilover route, possibly.

New swaybar endlinks as well. Went to get an alignment and couldn't due to the tires not being the same front and rear. (225/45 front 215/45 rear). Noticed the left side has more negative camber than the right side, up front. Gonna have to get that checked out.

Sounds like you've had one problem after another with this thing!
Hope you getting it ironed out.
Ever figure out the knocking?

Yes, and I'm now reconsidering keeping it or selling it, but the thing is that, as is, nobody will give me what I think it's worth so I'm just going to keep it and keep throwing money at it bit by bit. That's what happens when you enter the world of used cars, I guess.

The knocking seems to be a combination of high timing and the car still being only partially un-tuned. It is currently only tuned to run decently in cruising speeds. It has base map values for everything else.

Most of the knocking was cured using 91 octane which is why I say it's got too much timing down low. I didn't tune it (a friend who also installed the MegaSquirt-II did), but I'll start getting my hands on it once I get some income. For now, the car runs and can take me to nearby places.

There's also an ignition swap pending which will also get done once I've got more money.

I'm going to go EMS sooner or later. This is not going to be just a DD, so... might as well do it now and kill two birds with one stone.

1993 Celica GT Coupe - sold1994 Celica GT Liftback
Wideband installed (Innovate LC-1), now to do some road tuning later tonight. Still don't have the gauge affixed to where I want it, but the temp. location will have to do for a while until I get a fiberglass pod done at my local car audio shop.

Idle was 14.7, and some cruising around town got to as low as 11.5... so some tuning will definitely wake the car up (and save some gas!)

Rear wheel bearing has been ordered, and I'm in the process of waiting on a bumper.

I have issues with my rear struts which I'm looking to have taken care of soon.

So:

1. Wideband: >>done>>
2. Front bumper and low beams: >>pending>>
3. Wheel Bearing: >>pending>>

Next up: Spring Lowering Springs. Bought used OEM to get the car running properly. Now it is, so I want better springs for it. smile.gif Bought a set of Sprint Springs for my previous celica and they worked great.

Also ordered a couple of turbo goodies, nothing big yet, and a pair of Ingalls camber bolts for the rear wheels.

Wish I could upload pics from my HTC Wildfire...

Anyways bought some Castrol (castor oil lol) GTX High Mileage 10w-30 with a purolator pureone filter, 4 qts of Pennzoil Synchromesh, valve cover gasket, and two new struts for the rear and I hope the struts are the one at fault for the camber.

Got a light clunk in the back that sound s like loose end links. We'll see how it goes, I'll take pics.

Here's a closer pic of the center cap for the wheels, I found another car in campus with the same wheels but 15".

================

So as far as an update: I was having problems with rear camber. Replaced the rear eBay struts with Monroes and the camber is fixed. Could be fixed with Ingalls Camber Bolts, however.

Here's some pics:

My baby's pretty side

This is how -3.4degrees of camber looks like on 215/45/17 tires.

The "pirate eye"

Random things you see at Home Depot....

Wideband Install (Temp Location, but it works for now) NOTE: For those who know, they'll know the car isn't that lean lol. Those who don't, the car is turned off.

Getting chores done before working on the car (laundry... I'm a college student living alone, after all...)

Carlos and Argenis helping out (doing most of the work actually, they don't even let me work on my car XD)

Me (Right), Carlos (Rear) and Argenis (Left)... Argenis was preloading the struts and I was checking that the rear ones were good (they were).

The new front bumper that's coming home

Compression tested the engine, here are the results:

Needs new Spark Plugs, though. Will be getting those soon.

Changed the bad wheel bearing, no more mud-tire noise.
