Hey guys,

My clutch has gone on me so need to replace it.
I have started gathering parts for a 5sfte build so going to be doing that soon.
What stage clutch will i need to get to handle around 250whp? or will a stock clutch be able to do that?
What are the clutches that most people use in their 5sfte's?

i have a southbend cooutch. it work awesome and hold the power of my 5S-FTE. www.dxdracingclutches.com call them and ask for andy in the imports. tell him your power goals and he will make you a clutch. i also suggest a fidanza flywheel that you can get from them

this is just mho but I don't suggest Southbend clutches. with my 3S I blew two within a year (1 lasted less than 7 months and the other lasted less than 2 months) and I had a third on the way out before I switched to an ACT kit. all the kits were installed by a certified mechanic, who had no clue why they were snapping so fast. the mechanic said if it was launching or abuse he would be able to tell just by the look of the flywheel.

Southbend didn't want to work anything out with me and would evade emails and calls.

Smaay is a good guy and probably has had good luck with South bend. but for a company to tell me "you must have had bad luck" and not be willing to help out, I don't want anything to do with them. they are over priced for the quality you receive.

Thanks but i checked the southbend website and they do not distribute to Australia. Looking at prices at decent clutches here im better off buying one online. So if i was to go an exedy or spec etc etc, would stage 1 suffice? or would stage 2 or 3 be needed?

Also, i've dont countless hours of reading about light weight flywheels. From what i can gather for general street use they make driving more of a chore trying to get the shifts fast and smooth and as i spend quite a bit of time in traffic dont think its the best option. Also ive heard you cant really notice the difference unless your drag racing where you may run 1-2 tenths quicker. So thats my current view, feel free to try and change it lol.
(But in more interested in getting the right clutch)

actually I love my Lightweight flywheel in traffic. I feel I get smoother 'launches' with it. maybe if you know someone with one you can ask to try it out.

I think physical research is going to give you what you need to know. like for instance, Smaay said Southbend clutches are good, and I say they are crap. its all relative to you. you need to see what you like.

get off the stage bandwagon!!!!! every manufacturer has different stages for different things. its not a standard! and dont worry about the light weight flywheel. again that all hype. you will get used to it in less than an hour, and then you will love it! did you actually call Southbend? their website might not say that they will ship to Australia, but call them to confirm. again talk to Andy, he will hook you up.


Soulend, im sorry you had such bad luck with a SB clutch. i have one in every one of my cars and even my truck. never had a single issue. I have installed probably 100 in 6th and 7th gen celicas and Solaras. not a single problem there either.

I ran an act stage one setup on my 5sfte for 5 years. Worked beautifully till it finally spit a spring.

Southbend ships to Australia but the shipping costs more than the clutch .
All other brands like act are in the same boat.
I did however find a company like southbend here in australia called NPC who buy the exedy kits and modify the disc material so i think im just gonna go with them.

^^^ im pretty sure thats what all sub shops do. im pretty sure ACT does but i know OEM and SB clutches have an exedy stamp on the pressure plate
