does any one have or know where to get a cheep short shifter?

Can't beat a 7th gen short shifter from eBay. They're $20-30. Some people say they sit too close to the e brake, others don't mind them at all.

they work for the 6th gen?

Yes indeed. I'm not super familiar with them but as I understand it, they sit closer to the e brake handle than the stock shifter and you'll need to mount some washers under the shift assembly.

if you get the right one it come with metal bushings for under the assembly. at least mine did. and it works fine.
