I'm 19 and new to the forums. I've had my car for ~3 years now andI want to get some more power out of the ol 1.8 but all the chips I've found seem to be no-name cheapos. Anyone have any chips they've used and had good luck with, or any other recommendations for getting any more power out of it? And also what are the prices roughly? I've got a 94 st 1.8, has headers and full exhaust 2.5 inch and an intake. Thanks for any help!

hi, welcome, and before you get flamed.
This is not a civic forum, our cars do not gain anything with chips. Unlike most civics, you cant slap an intake and beat ferraris.
performance on these engines is almost like slapping a turbo on a dishwasher. Youll need more soap and wont wash faster.
Please read stickies for more info. Nothing comes cheap.
Turbo a 5sfe is 2000 plus and may gain up to 230 hp
2sgte swap is 4000 plus and starts at 230 hp, and you can mod it.
3sge beams is a 2500 plus swap and decent 200 hp.
those are most basic options, there are other swaps, and other options. But there are not electric fans, no chips, no gadgetry, no tricks or tips, to make it go faster.
Sorry but its the crude reality. Our cars are good looking but are hella slow.

You mean 3S-GTE? Lol...
He's also got a 1.8 not a 2.2
I'd say if you really want more power, look into saving for a GT model. ST's are pretty gutless.

Get a GT, do weight reduction, pretty quick.
sorry, gt's are only 0.5 seconds faster i have one, thats why i swapped beams in it.
even with a beams, it still looks like it needs more.
you can reduce all weight you can, unless u put that 1.8 in a go kart, you wont have a 10 second car

Best thing to do with an ST is enjoy the lightness. You have already changed your exhaust, so that's a step - although 2.5 might actually be too big for the 7A. Others more knowledgeable in that area should chime in. Lightweight wheels will help the thing feel quicker in every area that the dyno in your derrière can measure.

I've had both st an gt

my gt I have now ran 16.5 in a quarter an was still bone stock
gt is alot faster than a st imo

guys, guys its figurative speech. 5 seconds 10 seconds 10 minutes. the gains of trading the st for a gt? common,
toyota for the last ten years has been building economy engines in the USA, the 5sfe and 7afe are economy engines.
sure you can do a few upgrades, but at greater cost. cams 250 usd and up, catback, and a good decent intake, how much, total maybe e most 25 hp.
the 7afe can be turboed reliably, its done by several here. at a decent cost. dont waste money in upgrades that will be tossed away.
Research the turbo option, and collect parts slowly, with time youll have enouhg.
Celicas are like gold diggers, they require money to go fast at it...

Welcome to the forums man, yea our 1.8's dont have that much power but make up for it by having great low end torque. As far as your mods go, the intake wont help very much as our motors dont need much air, the header helps a little but the exhaust is too big...I would have gone with a 2" or 2.25" at its biggest. If you really want more power at a cheaper cost I would go with a turbo, I'm in the process of doing this myself (getting parts at the moment) or if you have more money go with a 3SGTE.
read through the stickies as there is a lot of info there or do a google search and most of the time you will find the answer.

I've driven a 1.8 and then bought my 2.2... there is a pretty big "in the seat of your pants" difference between the two. Not to mention, it's super easy to burn rubber with a 5S-FE compared to the 7A.
>
I'd agree. 2" is the largest I'd ever put on a 1.8. You're going to lose all that low end torque.
>
That's what these cars are best for. Suspension upgrades, urethane, and decent large wheels with lo-pro tires that grip well. That's the route I'm going and I can tell you, this thing feels great hitting a "suggested 35mph" corner at 70
