To answer your question you might want to take a look at stephen_lee's thread about dropping a V6 in his GT; he's using a 3VZ-FE from a Lexus ES300 and plans to turbo it as well. Also, snapshotgt's thread where he had a 1MZ-FE installed.

ok ill bite, just for information purposes on this thread....Why would you want to use an old 3VZ-FE that has an iron block and weighs a ton over an aluminum 1MZ-FE that makes 20 more HP and is so much lighter?

Iron holds up to the abuse of Forced Induction. The aluminum block on the 1MZ wont take it very well.

you are correct that an iron block will hold up better, however the 1MZ does have iron inserts in the cylinder walls. the pistons are the weakest point in the 1MZ.
Im gonna have to disagree with you, the 1MZ is a much better platform. newer technology, lighter, and later ones have VVT. other options are the 3MZ and of course the 2GR

I agree the 1MZ is a better motor (I am a bit bias...), but for someone looking for high HP goals with a turbo the 3VZ is a better starting platform.

3vz and 2jzge have very similar power outputs.
3vz with a stock rebuild will be better for boost than a any MZ engine with the same mods, as its stronger in stock form (not specifically the block, btw..)
1mz if built with foraged pistons and rods would be a better choice than a stock 3vz because of the fact it IS lighter

2JZ-GE no not quite, the 3VZ-FE only makes about 150 HP and 180 TQ, the 2JZ-GE makes about 220 HP and TQ. I wont even bring the 2JZ-GTE up here

3VZFE gets 185/189 for years 92-93. Years 94+ got 200/209 hp/tq. With no mechanical differences, only a different tune. Fixing Toyota's ****ty Y-pipe has been proven to gain you at least 20hp, bringing it up to the same as the 2JZGE.
The truck version, the 3VZE, makes 150/180.
I'm biased to this motor as it is my choice for swap. I've researched it for the last 3 years or so, reading any and all build threads I could find.
Back to the topic, if you want to spend the least amount of $$ on the rebuild/swap/turbo, the 3vz is the way to go as it will handle more power with a simple stock rebuild, if you choose to rebuild it even.
If you are willing to spend more $$$$, go for an MZ series block and rebuild with forged pistons and rods. This setup should have the ability get you more power than the 3vzfe, AND a better power to weight ratio, making it even faster, and maintaining the better weight distribution.

I know the US only had the 3VZFE in 92/93. It made it hard to find a deal on a donor car lol. The only diff was the tuning, anyway. You can import whole 94+ 3VZFEs or just use the 94+ ecu, or stand alone.

you cant compare power to PSI! prime example when i was on my stock twins at 15psi i was making about 375 HP, as soon as i went to a single turbo at 15psi i was making over 500HP. its apples and oranges

Less off the shelf performance parts and the 3VZ is getting harder to find in usable condition. It's an old motor. Lots of them have way too many miles or are rotting away in a junkyard somewhere. That was another reason why I went 1MZ. They're EVERYWHERE, can be had with low miles, and there is a reasonable aftermarket following for them - specifically in the way of superchargers.

if you're willing to do a full build, 1mz is a better option. the block is not the weak point in engines.
how often do you see a block fail? excluding a rod going through it.

But really... what sort of cheapo would go through the hassle of a turbo VZ/MZ swap and skimp on the internals... which are integral to making power?
