00-02 higher redline and has the lift bolt issue

03- fixed the lift bolt issue and lower redline

IMO If you can get an 01 GTS, put an 03 Front do a C-One v.2 lip, C-One V.1 hood, JDM headlights like my cousin's, Trial Rear, and Action Package Sides, with the Brashboy's Trunk lip.......all sitting on really agressice FN's Greddy S/C'd and slammed would be the best bet thumbsup.gif

03- Slammed w/C-One Lip, Trial v.1 rear, C-One sides is SECHS!!!!

Here is my cousin's 02 Full C-One V.1 kitted Greddy S/C tuned GTS

Just my opinion but they feel cheap in every way. And powerless until you get lift. But they're still nice cars and no matter which year they buy, they'll be getting a good car.

THIS. I couldn't stand the cheap interior at all. I couldn't even look at it! It was one of the main reasons why I sold it and got another 6th gen. IMO, best thing about the 7th gen celica is the 2zzge.

I've test drove two celica's a few years ago. First impression I got was wow the interior space is smaller than my car. The engine and rear suspension are the strong points of the car.

and that's saying something... its not that great of an engine...
I'll have to test drive one before buying i guess; also even if you get a new car the interior is cheap, even in higher end cars =X

interior colors changed too, early gray and late black.

handling/braking and an engine that doesn't choke at 5000rpm (in either trim) are the winning points for me. Yea, inside is cheap...so what? If I wanted a nice inside I'd have gotten an Infiniti or Lexus. Still looks better than the interior of an RSX or Civic though...

to me it was the overall package, not just certain parts here and there.

IMO, it's better than any other toyota performance engine i've seen or been in. my 00 gts was quicker than both the 92 and 91 alltrac my brother and i test drove. better technology and lighter, which drew me to the 00 gts.
I feel like this thread has turned into a 7th gen hate thread. My opinion of them is that I prefer the feel of the 6th gen, even if it is slower. But the 7th gen is by no means a bad car. Don't think of it as the car that followed the last GT4's or completely changed what people in general think of Celicas. It might have the same name and be a small FWD coupe but to me, the 7th gen is a completely different car. It's almost like an improved, upgraded tC at a fraction of the cost. That's just my opinion though, and you know what they say about opinions.

X2. Everyone will have different opinions....some good, some bad.
I'd not pass up a 1MZ or 3MZ swapped 6th gen GT if one came along, I'd keep it next to my 7th gen. The 6th gen got such wimpy stock engines state side, and the 3S is getting pretty dated. It's from the same era as the 4G6x engines from Mitsu. Both are still great engines but they're a few decades behind modern design and technology.

whole point of vvt-i on the intake side is for torque.

The whole point of VVT-i is for fuel economy and smooth power delivery across a wide rpm range without a rough idle or flat spots. You've gotten the L and VVT-i confused. the L word does the magic of lifting the valves or rather switching to the long duration high lift lobes. And let me tell you, they are long duration and high lift compared to anything you would ever see on a street driven car.

Wikipedia 2ZZ-GE:

>The 2ZZ-GE is a 1.8 L (1796 cc or 109.6 in³) version built in Japan. Bore is 82 mm (3.23") and the stroke is 85 mm (3.35"). It uses MFI fuel injection, has VVTL-i, and features forged steel connecting rods. Compression ratio is 11.5:1, necessitating "premium" gasoline (91 octane or above in the (R+M)/2 scale used in North America[4]). Power output for this engine varies depending on the vehicle and tuning, with the Celica GT-S, Corolla T-Sport,[5][6] Lotus Elise and Lotus Exige offering 141 kW (189 hp) but the American versions of the 2003 Corolla, Matrix, and Pontiac Vibe versions only developing 180 hp[4] with all later years offering anywhere from 173 hp in 2004 to 164 hp in 2006 due to a recurved powerband. he differing power numbers from 2004 through 2006 are due to changes in dynamometer testing procedures. The Australian variant Corolla Sportivo is 141 kW@7600 and 181N·m Torque.

181 NM is 133lb/ft. Really just splitting hairs here though, both engines produce roughly the same overall power output in the real world but the 2ZZ's VVT-i makes it more civil outside of the high cam, honestly it's not a bad engine out of lift between about 2500 and 6000. It's below 2500 that it's a real dog.

The topic started out to be a very informative thread, and could have been a good future reference point for those looking into buying a 1999/2000+ Celica.

But instead started into a honda vs toyota thread, so with the topic cleaned lets try this again...

Thank you Rust, Any way I think 00-02 they had lift issues and redline was higher. 03-05 they fixed the lift issue and gave it a face lift including new lights and bumpers. I don't think they changed anything as far as suspension, keep in mind I don't own a 7th gen gts but I do want one =p.

00-02 Lift bolts were prone to shearing off, replace them with the new design and problem is solved. Check them every so often to make sure they're not wearing and replace as needed. It was a bolt design issue, not an engine issue. Using the TSB method you can usually extract broken lift bolts in about 2-3 hours if you've not done it before. One of mine was broken, symptom was that lift sometimes felt weak since only one cam may have been getting into the big lobes. Typically for whatever reason the intake rocker shaft lift bolt usually breaks. Mine was like that, fixed it, all good. Little sweat on my forehead first time I started it then hit lift.

are there any mpg differences between 00-02 and 03-05 gts? I heard with careful driving some guys have gotten mid 30mpg

Power in Balance90 ST coupe- Sold95 ST hatch- Dead :’(02 Impreza RS- DD
These car's mpg are AMAZING. 40+mpg for highway and 28+ city (similiar with GT and GT-S models). I read somewhere the automatic GT's were getting close to 50mpg. MPG was one of the strong points of the 7th gen Celica.
i have never seen that high mileage, my GT makes 36MPG on teh highway about about 30 in town. my GTS gets slightly less than that just because i cant keep my foot out of it. Its not uncommon to get over 400 miles in a tank of gas.

i drove my gts like a granny most of the time but ill redline once in a while because it's quite a fun car. but yeah i've always gotten high 30s in my gts. before i bought my car, i never knew they had such good mpg until i looked it up and i was amazingly surprised.
