Clutch has been acting up. Sometimes it doesnt work - 6G Celicas Forums

I dont know if this has anything to do with the sudden problem, but I never had a problem with my clutch before. My car is at 190k. Last week I changed the tranny fluid because of rough shifting and occasional grinding. It fixed everything now my tranny shifts are all smooth. NIght and day difference. But today I ran into a new problem. I parked, got into my car started it pressed down on the clutch and the clutch wouldnt disengage because it wouldnt let me shift into any gears...so I turned of the car shifted into gear and it worked from there on. Again..later today I stopped at a light pressed down on the clutch and it wouldnt let me shift so I turned the car off then shifted and started it back up and it worked fine. What seems to be causing this problem?
could be the throw out bearing, is there any chattering noise when your are idling?
Nope, not that I call tell
slave cylynder? maybe? when was the last time you did change the clutch?

Well, I have only had the car for the last 15k....so to my knowledge the clutch has never been changed. It doesnt seem like there is a problem with the clutch except with it no disengaging. This problem started a week after I changed the tranny fluid so I wonder if there is a relation.
sounds like one of the springs on the disk broke, its not the TO bearing. its possible its the slave but all you have to do to confirm is push on the clutch and have someone else watch the slave push the forks.

You mean one of the clutch springs? It just might be. I had someone press on the clutch and I can hear a squeaky noise coming from the clutch area. The clutch works most of the time...its just occasionally it acts up. I guess its fine until another spring breaks. I guess I am looking at a new clutch pretty soon?
not something you want to wait on replacing because it could just go altogether at any time...
Get the master cylinder rebuild.

i doubt its the master cylinder

intermittent fault, i doubt its mechanical (such as a pressure plate finger, clutch fork, throw out bearing etc)

Look at the hydraulics first. Had a similar issue on a mates 184 i was fixing, seals in the master cylinder was the issue.

Get someone to depress the clutch and you watch how much travel there is in the clutch fork, take note. Then when it plays up do the same thing, see if the travel is equal or less.

That's not entirely true.

In December, I was on my way to my graduation ceremony when a similar situation happened to me. I tried to push in the clutch and it felt like I was trying to stand on a leafspring. It would work intermittently, but I had to shut the car off to put it into gear then start the car in gear.

When I got the motor out, this is what I found.

Those pieces of the plastic bushings were getting caught behind the pressure plate springs, causing the pedal to feel very stiff.

Replaced the clutch and haven't had the issue since.

The clutch doesn't get stiff. it will just stop letting me shift. today for example I was in traffic shifting to second gear and the shifted wouldn't go into second gear. I had to shut off the car, come to a complete stop then shift. the clutch does seem to squeak now when I press down on it...doesn't seem like its the slave cylinder. any other ideas
I would believe if it squeaks, then it is something mechanically because it shouldn't squeak at all.
ahh well if there is squeeking then its possible its mechanical.

my clutch squeeks too when you press the pedal in and when u let it out.

noise has always been there, but never posed a problem., ive had those same symptoms as the OP describes in 3 different Celicas and every time it's been clutch master cyl rebuild to fix it.

i had clutch changed after the master cyl rebuild, and the squeek is still there but no problems.

try rebleeding the clutch before getting it rebuilt though, it may just be some air bubbles

its not air unless you opened the system. air does not magically get in there
