Help diagnose my gt4 noises **with video** - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #79401 13 posts Started by schmooot
Well I'm stumped.

Here are the details

94 ST205

Creaking sound...once every wheel revolution

Happens in forward in reverse...more prominent in reverse. Seems to go away when I get up to speed higher than 35ish kmh but maybe I just can't hear it after that. Dead cold it is very quiet but I drove around the block just before the video and it warmed it up enough to be very noisy.

Definitely happening every revolution, clutch in or out, transmission neutral or in gear.

I put it up on jackstands in the shop and ran it but all 4 wheels were quiet...only happens when on the ground (loaded down I suppose). Unless I get it on a rolling road I think that's the best I can hear

Still happens with light to full brake pressure so I doubt it is sticky brake pads.

Wheel weights come very close to the caliper but no touching.

Just put these wheels on last week...with 15mm hubcentric spacers and longer studs. The car was stored all winter in the shop and I ran all last year with the stock rims. and only spacers in the rear...don't really remember hearing noises like this last year with stock rims but there was some wooga wooga noises coming from up front (which also seems to have gotten worse this year)

Seems to be coming from front drivers side but I can hear it well on the pass side as well, and the odd creak on the rear drivers side.

I am highly suspect of the wheel/hub bearings. I just tore apart the pass side and had a look at the hub bearings and it certainly doesn't spin like a bearing should, kind of grindy and hard to turn. but would like some other opinions before I drop the big bucks on a couple new ones. They are closed press-in type and bloody expensive...nothing I can just pull and repack

Anyways...watch the vid and let me hear your thoughts/concerns

I've been chasing rotational noises for years,

Have had to replace all 4 wheel bearings and both superstrut arms to fix the noises,

But what I hear from your video sounds, I've never ever heard from my car.

Yours sounds like its rubbing something like a stray piece of plastic at the top as i noticed the sound happens once for every full rotation.

The sound of my worn wheel bearings (infront) weren't audible until 30kph turning a corner, It was an oscillating metal on metal friction sound. It was obvious in the rear as the wheels developed free play in toe in/out.

Can you chuck another set of rims on it to check?

It does happen at the same point in each roation.

Sounds like the tire is rubbing on the guard lining or something, i doubt thats the issue but check anyway.

Pull the wheel off and check of anything is scrubbing on the driveshaft/cv's/crake rotor etc.

I highly doubt its a wheel bearing but check for play anyway.

No noise with the car up in the air, only on the ground, I was all over underneath there and nothing is rubbing.

I had the one side all apart and the bearings do feel very stiff and dirty when I turn by hand. Then again the sound could very well be coming from the driveshaft itself. I just ordered new bearing kits from the UK, we'll see when they show up

Yeah I think you need to replace your wheel bearings.
I had a similar sound and I replaced my wheel bearings and it was fine.
Thanks, I've got new ones on the way from the UK.

sounds like the clips that hold the brake pads.
Either broken or not greased up.

Yeah Id say 90% sure its bearings, especially seeing as they make more noise when they heat up! always a good idea to take the disc off and wriggle the flange, if that has play then thats the problem rather than pulling the driveshaft out and having a look behind.
bump i have literally the same exact noise and only makes it when "under load". like the exact problem!Only seems to be the drivers side, havent noticed if its more going in reverse, its at any speed i think, just can here it more when at low speeds
I wish he posted if it was fixed by doing the bearings!

any new updates?

Oh sorry, thought I had updated this. I forgot to torque the wheel nuts....I know it was a rookie mistake and I felt like/still feel like an idiot. I had put the wheels on just so I could relocate it in the shop during the winter and promptly forgot all about it. It was the aluminum spacers making the noise.

Don't judge me

Lesson learned I guess. Gotta be careful with that because I was involved in an accident going 100 km/h and all of a sudden the front left wheel came off. I was around 10 years old coming home from a camping trip and my mom was able to safely steer the van to the shoulder. We were lucky the van didn't flip.

oh well crap lol, I guess Ill check the tightness of the bolt tomorrow. Drove 14 hours back from new york would been pissed if the wheel fell off haha.
thanks ill keep it updated
