Squealing and tight steering when it's cold out - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #78234 6 posts Started by Rider
It only happens when it's really cold out (<35F or so). It'll "squeal" for about 2-3 seconds, and then die down (unless it's ridiculously cold, and then it'll slowly die down over 5-10 seconds). The tightness is gone after driving for 1/8 mile or so.

Could it be any other part of the power steering system, or just pump showing its age (at 182k miles right now, and I don't think it's ever been changed)? And if it's the pump, should I change it now, or wait 'til it gets worse?

you need a new power steering belt, less than 10 dollars and around 20 minues of work.

remove your alternator belt, then remove your power steering belt, replace both if possible. once you replace the power steering belt, you'll have to re tight it back in a few days as it stretches a little, then you'll be set.

total cost is less than 25 dollars for both belts. power steering belt is around 10 dollars.

Is that one of the "drive belts?" I just got those changed, and no reduction in noise or steering tightness.
wow, thanks culp! incidentally i have been having the same exact problem but a little worse (with my daily driver 95 talon) i was pretty sure it was the belts, & this confirmed it!
