Engine locking up? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #78204 19 posts Started by mkernz22
Is there any reason why a 5sfe would just lock up while driving?
would it be the engine, or possibly the tranny?
it's a 1997 5spd 5sfe, with 190k on it.
im looking to see if it could be an easy turn around or not. help me out guys smile.gif

What do you mean "lock up"
put in neutral, if it turns over its most likey not the engine. but if it was stuck in gear it wont turn over.

It takes 8,460 bolts to assemble an automobile, and one nut to scatter it all over the road.Celica: The name is derived from the Spanish word for "heavenly" or "celestial".Back-2-Back July COTM 15&16
the guy said his son was driving and it just locked on him. no pistons through the block and no loud noises.
he said that it doesn't want to turn over.
the add on CL said the engine seized.

Maybe his timing belt snapped. That's what happened when my tensioner pulley seized up and melted my timing belt. No warning, just locked engine. It wouldn't turn over.

No, I dunno about the 5S, but the 7A is a no interference engine, so the valves didn't get screwed to hell.

so mkernz22 did it loose any oil? or anything like that or was its just BAM and the engine locked.

the guy said the oil levels are fine, he checked it after. there was no bam, it just locked up haha
That's what happened to me. Oil level was fine, fluids were all in order, no leaks.

well im hoping it's just the engine that is the problem, possibly the timing belt cause that would make it soooo much better smile.gif
well if there is no holes in the block thats always a good thing lol. i would have to agree its prolly the timing belt.

it's going to be such a STEAL if it's just the timing belt!
Just pull the cap off the rotor and if it's not rotating, it's the timing belt.

alright, ill definitely check it out when i go by tomorrow. im going to wait to see if its the timing belt or not until after i buy it cause i dont want to fix it before i get it lol laugh.gif
so i went by with my friend and checked it out. it wouldn't start when the clutch was in so it must be the timing belt.
me and him are splitting the $600 price, so $300 each. he's taking the tranny, clutch pedal, lines, and etc for his v6 camry.
the leather seats are shot, but some of the interior will be parted out. don't ask for parts because i will list what parts are FS.
while i was getting some parts off this car today, my buddy decided to pull the cap off the overflow bottle piece and he was like "oh, it uses the red coolant" then a few seconds later he was like "dude, this isn't red coolant mike, it's oil!" and i was like "WTF?!?, no way" and sure enough, it was oil.... so we ventured and took off the radiator cap, the sight we saw was not pretty at all. Oil, yes oil, was in the radiator, and it was almost overflowing with it. So I take a look around the block and notice something unusual around the oil filter. The block was partially cracked in 2 spot right below it. So that's how the story goes for now, but this thread will be updated with pictures once the block is torn into.
