5fse Engine Running loud - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #78144 13 posts Started by kamax
Hey I was wondering what's the best way to diagnosis why my engine is making the noise that it makes. It's really loud like something is leaking. It's loud when idle and louder when revved. What's the common cause of this? I'll post video of the sound when I get the chance.

Thanks.

is it a knocking sound, you might have spun a bearing.

it's more of a loud muffler loose sound, but kinda guggling sounds kinda after the rev is let go?
u prob have an exhaust leak

If the little hose from the intake to the valve cover(like a large vacume hose) melts as my cheap hose did) or leaks it will sound like the car is going to bloow up.

The hissing sound is your idle air control valve, the clunk or girgle that is barely audible upon deceleration could be many things, the sound quality is really terrible. Could be a misfire, could be an exhaust leak causing popping sounds, could be worn exhaust hanger allowing the exhaust to bang into the underside of the vehicle when torque is applied.

If you want to find an exhaust leak, when the car is cool / cold start it up, and cover your hand with a rag or towell and cover the tail pipe (with force don't let air escape for a few seconds) if there is a breach anywhere you will hear exhaust escaping from it. visibly, you'll be able to see soot around where the hole / crack in the exhaust is usually.

Do not try this when the car has been running for a while or hot, you will get burned. Please exercise caution.

What I am more worry about is the loud ass idle. Sounds like a freaken lawn mower lol. Thanks I'll try that covering the exhaust up when the engine cool down a bit. You think running seafoam in might have cause the problem? and you think throwing seafoam in might help identify where the leak is coming from since you know... seafoam make hella smoke lol
well, i found the exact problem today (weather permitted)

turn out there's a hole in my exhaust lol. is this the cat converter?

and will this fit to replace it

yeah the pipe is the one from down from the exhuast manifold /engine area. front of the car between the front wheels

no that's no the CAT at all haha
it's like a flex / resonator part on the pipe

yeah i figure that much after looking around a bit =p , but onto the next question... will that replacement work? ^_^

cat is in the back i am guessing, before the muffler.
the cat is actually right in the middle of the car, but i have no clue what you should replace that with
It's a flexi joint. The exhaust is held in pretty solid with the factory exhaust hangers, when the engine is revved the torque moves the engine back and forth, the flexi is just there to absorb this movement so that you dont pull the exhaust manifold nuts off when it's revved.

just go to an exhaust shop and they will cut it out and weld in a new one, it shouldn't be very expensive
