There's not much else I can say to describe the problem. The engine runs amazing from idle to 4000, but then at 4k I can feel it stop pulling [as in the power just seems to stop] and it just kind of hesitates there and bucks a little bit. I dont want to blow it up so I upshift as soon as it starts doing it.
I currently have no CELs, I checked the plug wires earlier and they look basically brand new and all seem to be connected properly. The prev owner was a member here and had NGK plugs put in. I'm thiking of replacing the plugs but not sure what else would cause this problem.
Thanks for any input.
can you take a vid of it happening?
the 5s really runs out of steam above 4400rpm, but sounds like your having more of a problem than just the normal 5s choking out up top.

It sounds possible, given that its probably got higher miles or could be over due for timing belt.

get a timing light and hook it up to your battery and the the flasher up to the #1 spark plug wire. it will flash each time that plug fires. point it at the crank pulley and see where the timing is. oh before you do that you have to jumper Te and E1 on the diagnostic box, that will put you in test mode

And it should flash at the 10 mark if its all in time correctly, just FYI.

yeah im willing to bet its a timing issue. i've done many t-belts (one on a 5s) and if they're off one tooth they either idle like shiit, and run great at high rpm, or they run great at low rpm, and like shiit at higher rpms (the 5s bogged around 4000-4500 when it was a tooth off, btw)

guys the 5s is at an angle, so the cams will be a bitch to set. PLUS you have to make sure theyre lined up with eachother. im betting thats both your issues
move timing one tooth forward, test
move timing back 2 teeth, test.

had a problem similar to this in a 280zx, ended up being a clogged fuel filter, the fuel pressure couldnt get high enough to push the power above 3500 rpms on my z it would lope between 3400 and 3500 rpms and not push any further. changed the fuel filter and i was able to push it into the low 6ks just fine.

im wondering if the cams are in there correctly.
mike, did you follow the BGB for installing the cams, following the matchmarks on the slave gears?

I'm having the same problem, but there is no bucking or sputtering. I just have dramatically reduced power at 4k, and almost NO power at 5.5k. New timing belt, thrice-cleaned throttle body, and still nothing.
I DID, however, have the problem of the car lurching as if to lose all power for a split second above 3k, turns out the plug was somehow partially yanked out of the cam sensor and the sensor itself was damaged.
FIXED!!!!!! Try, if you have not already, replacing the fuel filter. Mine was so clogged one could hardly blow air through it. hello 30 hp :}

It is attached to the inside wall of the drivers side wheel well rear of the air cleaner. About thigh high. Let me know if it worked!
Oh, and definitely try this before timing, for alas, the filter is only $24

i just got back home for break and im thinking its the fuel filter. just maybe.
everything is lined up perfectly. the only thing (which i had mentioned before) that might be off is the U notch alignment. im not positive, but it could be
