Yesterday i brought my self a 1994 gt four which has done 198kms, drives well apart from when its going over rough surfaces eg a gravel driveway the driver side front suspension knocks and the front radiator fans go are quite loud even when the engines cold. The celica has the doors with the 3 speakers and i haven't seen too many celica's like that. Which celica's came with the 3 speaker doors ?

The front suspension knock is a problem ive been chasing up for the entire time ive had my gt4... the culprits are generally...

superstrut arms
wheel bearings
top hats. -- due to the way superstrut works, a worn superstrut ball joint will put enuff play in the strut for it to tug the top hat enough to break apart as mine did.

the superstrut arms cost $300 + labour
wheel bearings are $160 + labour
and the tophats are $160 + labour

another knock you may have is when you hit the accelerator pedal -- worn out engine mount bushes, i went with nolathane for mine which cost $130 per mount, and $150 for the large mount on the driver side.

these cars are expensive when it comes to maintenance, i hope your turbo is ok!

also, you may have leaky shocks with a gt4 that age, mine did... i went for coilovers instead of stuffing around with standard crap.


as for the 3 speakers, it was a factory option for all celicas, you're lucky (or unlucky) enough to get them in yours,

personally I think the 3 speakers is a waste of time and space since the 8" speaker has fkall bass u may aswell ditch it and make some 8" to 6" spacer adaptors and just put 6" speakers in there, and have a sub for your bass.

unfortunately a standard 12" sub box doesnt fit in a gt4 boot so it will have to be a custom size.

Yeah from what ive herd superstrut cost quite alot to get replacement parts..

Would you know anything about why the radiator fans are going full out ? Even while cold ?

I haven't noticed a knock when i hit the accelerator..
Turbo ok ? Seems to boost ok ? How would you check ? lol this is my first turbo car.

Yeah i was thinking of getting some coilovers for it.. make it a tad bit lower, How much did your coilovers cost ?

Oh yup, im am planning on sticking a 8' sub in the bottom, and make a custom bracket to hold a 3 way where the mid range speaker went.
I've got a 12' sub box in the boot, it lies flat though.. I'm thinking of making a custom box as its quite hard to mount it due to the spacesaver the sub box originally came out of my ss1.

pull your intake hose off and try to wiggle the compressor back and forth and side to side.... it should only have like 1mm of give at the most either way

i didnt do this when i bought my gt4, it was my 1st turbo aswell... 1 week later i smoked some hsv V8 holden in the mountains and came out with a blown turbo lol, the whole thing was junk after that, had to get a new one, housing and all.


if theres any shaft play in ur turbo get it rebuilt right away before u do some serious damage... also make sure ur running good oil and change every 5000kms as bad oil clogs the oil feed galleries to the turbo causing premature bearing wear.

i got the bc coilovers for $1300 but i wouldnt recommend them because of the work required to install them, and the front doesnt go much lower ... (the engineer wont certify them if u weld into the cast piece so u need to leave about 15mm of the steel tube and send it for crack testing, because of that extra 15mm, even on the lowest setting u cant slam it)

i recommend teins but they are like $3500 or something.... these are damn expensive cars

yeah man including the initial cost of the car, i've spent around $30,000 on my celica gt-four. for that price i would be close to having a r33 skyline gt-r or a supra TT aero top

i only ever topped my spending on my old celica ss-iii at around $8000

I can't check for turbo shaft play at the moment as my engines a bit hot..
The car had a service the day i purchased it so all the oil should be good.

The engine seems to smoke a bit when boosting ?

I'm not planning on slamming the car, i would just like it a bit lower.

Boosting smoke is normal for these cars, the factory ecu runs really rich under boost.

Also with the amount of kms on your engine you could expect some of your oil to seep thru worn piston rings into your engine.

It would be a good idea to check your intercooler and the output of the turbo for any oil residue as this would be a bad sign... -- other than that, the rest of the smokeyness is normal.

Don't worry if the oil is just in your inlet manifold but not your intercooler or turbo, as this comes from the breathers.

On another note I would disconnect the pipe feeding oil into your intake, cap it off on the intake pipe and minifilter off the factory oil catch container.

Congrates on purchasing your GT4. Would look into your cooling system, if the radiator fans are coming on at low temperatures.

I think the troubles are distance to travel to meets and not enough NZ members registered on here I'm hoping that with the site update, there'll be a NZ section, which could draw in more members.

I was gonna make an NZ celica register, kinda like ozcelica except without the forums since we're all on here or toyspeed, i dont know where else we will find nzers with mean celicas and gt4s

which is why I thought here, its one of the first place that come up on google when you search celica/forum

I checked the turbo for any shaft play before seem to have none.
Do the compressors blades look a bit worn ?



I also checked the output of the turbo for oil residue, none.

I recon it would be really cool if we had a New Zealand Celica meet, its just trying to get people know about it etc..

I guess ur turbo is ok for now then, its kinda hard to tell, its the sort of thing thats fine 1 moment, and really buggered the next. theres not much of a warning time for something that spins at 40,000 rpm with half a mil clearance lol.
