Problem with installing short shifter - 6G Celicas Forums

I just tried to install E-bay short shifter (I think 7th gen) in my car and experienced problem - the bottom part of the shifter (from the ball down) is too long:

I'd guess about 1/4 -3/8 inch...

The bottom of the shifter is hitting this little bump on the chasis (hard to explain without picture) and won't go to 1st, 3rd and 5th gear.
I need approximately 1/4-3/8 inch more clearance.
I am already considering buying another shifter (this one was very cheap) but here is a thought:
What would happen if I placed 1/4 (3/8) inch spacers under the whole (white plastic) shifter assembly and lifted it up??
Would it negatively affect anything?

You need aluminum spacers to go between the body and the shifter assembly. Most good shifters come with them - cheap ones do not.

^^Yup. Mine did the same thing. I used 2 of the spacers in the back and it works fine, and feels good.

I saw your post in my other "shifter thread". Do the ones in the link raise the assembly or are they just replacements of the rubber bushings?

get some home depot washers and raise as you need it.

that ebay shaft should have came with the spacers.

it could be the spacers, or you could be having the same problem i did with the ball not seating correctly in the cup, when you put the first cup on the bottom was it really snug? see if you can put wood shims under the shifter and put the ball into the cup, this could be your problem

ball.... cup... shaft. Heh heh.

The reason why you need the spacer is because the shaft is a bit long, by using the spacer it lifts the shifter assembly higher so that the shaft can sit without rubbing anything, thus makes also the shifter sit lower.

yea if need to have spacers, or some how lift the whole assembly up.
