OBD1 question - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #72697 6 posts Started by Havok1997GT
ok i know this is a celica site, duh.

however i get more info from this site then trying to find a 4 Runner site....plus its still toyota and i think someone on here can help me.

ok. I cant find a OBD1 reader anywhere. and i dont want to pay $75 everytime i get a check engine light. i know there is a trick to reading codes on OBD1 celicas with the Blinking CHECK ENGINE light. so my first question is this:

Is the system for all OBD1 in toyotas the same? meaning is it the same set up or system in all old toyotas?

my second question:

Does anyone have a chart or something with the list of codes that the ECU would give? something like......3 blinks means that the cylinder 1 is miss firing.

thanks all, for any help.
I can tell you how i read my ST205 codes but not sure if its suitable for your car so be carefull.
Under my bonnet is a diagnostic port(just a little black box)i open the box & connect terminals E1 and TE1 together with a paper clip then get in the car & turn the ignition to on(dont start the car!!!)
The engine check light on the dash will now flash, continuous even flashing means you have no error codes.
uneven flashing eg. flash, flash, flash, pause, flash flash would be a code 32 for example.

I can then check against a list to find out what the error code is smile.gif

REMEMBER THIS IS ON A CELICA GT4 ST205 & I DONT KNOW IF THIS WILL BE SUITABLE FOR YOUR CAR,SO IF IT BREAKS ITS NOT MY FAULT biggrin.gif
What Castrolman said should work all you need to figure out is which two wires you need to jump and then read the codes. If you get me more on the runner I can look the process up Monday when I have the shop computers.
that will work on almost every toyota actually.
