Springs or shocks making noise? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #72494 18 posts Started by str8thugginit4ya
Ok, let me explain this thoroughly. I removed my front suspension from my car because I was spraying the wheel wells with some rubberized undercoat. I removed the Shocks & Springs; I have Tein springs with the stock shocks. I've had the springs installed for nearly a year and a half now and I've never had any problem at all. Now, when I re-installed the suspension, I started to hear this noise every time I turn the steering wheel. It only makes the noise when I am pulling out of my driveway and turning the wheel, stuff like that. Only if I'm like under 15 MPH, then I hear the noise, but if I'm going any faster than that then it's not making the noise. Any suggestions on what that could be?

-Thanks, Ryan

Sounds like you didn't tighten something down.

There wasn't that much bolts for me to miss to tighten down. There was three up top, and two big ones on the botton. Oh, and just two bolts that held the brake lines and stuff. That's about it. Am I missing something?

since your still running stock struts they could be blown on that side from lowering the car

Hmm, that is correct. Unless you took the assembly itself apart.

Your lugs tight enough? Does it sound like tire rub? Or a metal ping? Did you bend your hub dustshield and its dragging on the rotor? I would suggest taking it all apart agian, regreasing all that requires it, check it twice agian, and put it back together.

>There is an arrow on the strut, this needs to point outwards or the spring will make that popping noise....

I'm hearing the same noise, actually. New springs and struts installed two weeks ago. I've been told it's just the tire rubbing on the fender due to alignment problems, but I haven't actually checked the dust shield on the rotor.

what kind of noise?

I don't normally drive fast, but when I do its on a curvy section of this island
It sounds a little like rubber rubbing on plastic, so yeah, I think that's it. Before, it sounded more metallic though.

Thanks for all the help! I'll take apart tomorrow again and try to re-install them. Although, I do remember holding onto the dust shield pretty tight, could that make that noise as well? I mean it sounds more of a rubbery noise than a metallic rubbing. I'll let you guys know the verdict once I point out the arrow that Azian is talking about. Thanks agin guys, this community rocks!

Not at all tire rub, and it doesn't sound like any metal rubbing. Almost like a stretching rubber, or something of the sort.

Ok, so I tried out Azian Advanced idea about facing the arrow toward the rotor and voila! No more noise, and it rides a LOT better. I had them istalled correctly before, but when I re-installed them I didn't face the top mount correctly. Oh, and I did remember to grease them 808Celica, so I knew that wasn't the problem. Thanks to everyone who helped, and especially Azian!

-Ryan
Hmmm...alright, guess I'll have to try this too. I do hear a popping noise every now and then.

Coilover Sleeves ftw.

Don't have coilovers, but I have the boots on my shocks! thumbsup.gif
