i finally found a good pic of one and it looks as if the IC is mounted on the side verses the top. would running a FMIC do anything more power wise?

Not to my knowledge, i would talk to _jim_. hes using a stock WRC gen3 top mount intercooler and he is aiming to make more power than anyone on these forums (400+whp)

just to clarify a bit.
the 3rd gen uses a top mount water to air intercooler, which uses coolant to the intake air VS a 2nd gen air to air top mount that used air that is forced over it by the scoop on the alltrac hood.
the water to air intercooler is much more efficent than the 2nd gen or most FMIC's you see on ebay.

also, tufy, hardtarget and a few others here, as well as dozens over on mr2oc have been making 400whp+ on the 3s for years.

will a mr2 3s mount just the same as one from a celica?

????? but no the stock mr2 ic wont fit any of the celicas. the celica ic are all top mounted...all the mr2 ic are all side mounted...but u can use a celica st205 water cooled ic on a mr2 with little mods.

the motor itself, yes. but there are diffrences.
the mr2 mounts the alternator on the back on the motor, the water necks are diffrent, harness ect. you need to use celica parts to make it all work in a celica.
