Evening all... newbie here.

I have just got a Celica st 1998 1.8... and so far everything is going well.

However, I have had a quick look at the dash and it seems like I need to remove the centre console etc,
Is there a how to anywhere?

I've had a look around at the FAQs and I can't find anything.
Also, is there a surround which I can get that has a cubby hole in it?
Storage etc

I am assuming it is the same as on my 94.

First, remove the shifter trim. It is held in by 4 clips, and all you have to do is either pull up on it with your hands, or pry up CAREFULLY with a flat blade screw driver. I say carefully because you dont want to break it.

After it is loose, there are a couple of plugs on the back of the cig lighter. One you just pull off, the other you twist because it is a bulb.

Once you have that off and out of the way, you will see two screws at the bottom of the trim that goes around the radio and climate control. Remove those two screws, and the carefully pry out at the top, and pull it out of the way. You can unplug the clock and hazard switch, but you dont have to.

Then, in order to remove the radio, you should see 4 screws, 2 on each side of it. Remove these, and pull the radio out. Then unplug it, and take the screws out that hold the brackets to the radio.

Once you have a new radio, you are going to need to splice the adapter harness you have to the harness of your new radio. I suggest using butt connectors, that way you can simply unplug it if you want to replace it.

Once you get everything spliced and connected, simply plug the adapter harness into the factory harness, and go in reverse order.

Oh, and if you buy a dash installation kit for your car, it will come with a DIN pocket and usually comes with trim rings and stuff to make the installation look more finished.

Yeah, just remove it and you should be able to either put the pocket above or below the stereo.

any idea where to get the dash installation kit in the UK?

You could look on ebay or crutchfield.

had a look around... can't find any full kits, or even fascia adapters for this year...
Looked on the bay and various car audio sites..

Will a single din head unit fit in to the original layout ok?

Or will it be a pain in the ass?

single DIN fits fine. simply use mounting brakets holding the existing HU in place. no need to put in a HU cage etc etc. 5 minute job

Fantastic... Are the mounting brackets already in place? I'm guessing all I need to buy is the HU and a harness adapter?

I may do this tonight and then do a step by step with photo's for the next person who asks

It's a very easy install. No dash kit or nothing. Just use the stock brackets.

wow guys come on.... in this same section... at the very top it says HOw-TOS... these are called the sticky's... ok you open that up and just a few down it says "wiring an aftermarket headunit" or something to this effect...
