Coilovers recommendations for GT - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #65766 12 posts Started by SteJay
Hey Guys

My friend wanted me to ask you guys for your recommendations on a set of coilovers for his 94 GT, we figured this would be the right place to ask as you guys have them on your cars so know what you are talking about, all that seems to be available here in the shops in Ireland are tein super streets or k sport coilovers. Every shop he goes to try to sell him the tein ss, they dont seem to know anthing about suspension.

I have read all the posts in the suspension forum but could only find mention about megan coilovers

We have read bad things about the tein ones being more for track use. The roads here in Ireland where we live are terrible and the stock suspension is a bit cruel on your back as it is. So he is looking for a comfortable set of coilovers that wont break your back over bumps, preferably with at least a 40-60 mil drop.

I've read about the Tein Comfort series ones but the overall opinion is that they are overpriced and you are only paying for the name. He tried lowering it with just springs before but the rubbing was unbearable as the roads everywhere are uneven so he went back to stock so naturally now he wants to do the drop properly on a set of coilovers

He was quoted 1000 euro for a set of the super streets/k sports so his budget would be around that figure not including fitting if that helps!

Thanks in advance for any replies

megan has really good adjustability, height, damper, camber. I've tried softest to hardest setting and it feels softer than stock all the way to very stiff for track use.

Yeah I read your post about them, they sound cool. I wasnt actually aware you could adjust the soft-hard settings I thought that coilovers were either hard or soft and you could just adjust the height.

adjusting the height also adjusts the stiffness at the same time. the lower u go, the more the springs compress, making it stiffer.

if you are ONLY limited to K-Sport or Tein, i would go with k-sport...only because it comes with upper pillowball mounts. Teins are very good coilovers, they are pricey but they perform amazingly, the teins dont come with pillowball mounts whoch would be an extra $250 on top of the $1300 you would pay for the teins.

He would like to go through a retailer because then he'll get a warranty but if he gets them online he might not, so he will probably have to choose between the two I mentioned. But if there was a more comfortable set available Im sure he wouldnt mind taking a chance on them

Another question I have was about the super strut suspension on the ssIII's, I am looking into buying one- a 98 jap import. But I read that the super strut suspension is troublesome and expensive to fix. A guy I know who had one had his ss suspension collapse and because the parts were so expensive/hard to get he had to put the car off the road for a few months before he could get it fixed, but what I wanted to know is if it can be replaced by buying and fitting a set of coilovers or is there more to the setup?

Thanks for any replies

megans are full coilovers comes with camber, height, damper 32 way, and pillowball mounts, fully replaceable. remove your old, put in the megans.

no commission lol. the coilovers just impressed me how at the hardest setting they are really good for track - real stiff. On the softest setting, they can even get softer than stock suspension. I tried softest, my car was bouncing around like crazy on deep bumps. had to stiffen it a bit. However if you have good roads and left it at the softest, you would prolly not go back to stock struts.

ive heard many things about the super strut suspension but never paid attention.
there are a few companies that make coilovers for them but tein and ksport dont fall under that category. let me know and i can come up with a few brands

I will come back on the super strur suspension during the summer if i can get an ss3 for advice on coilovers

The megan coilovers sound good but I would say they would have to be set up to stiff for our roads otherwise the car will bounce all over the place. And if he has to go for a stiff ride maybe he should get the k-sports that come with a year garantee.

TEIN makes Super strut application... it just comes in the form the GT4 setup which sports higher spring rates...but it is for the SS application none the less
