Ok guys. As many of you know i am going to be turboing my celica towards the end of this month/beginning of march. I have a 1994 celica GT coupe with 98k on it. The compression and leak tests went perfect. i only need to get a new valve cover gasket. I plan on turboing with a t3/t4 (ebay turbo). i know im probly gonna take some sh!t for the turbo but honestly i dont care. its my car and i will do with it what i choose. the numbers will show haha. But ive been talkin to Jim for the past 2 years about my build. The original plan was to drive over to jersey and jim and i would install it. but recently i found a garage and dyno that are very close to me. so i will be using that garage to install my turbo set up with my good friend Cam (Boosted185). I cant thank Jim and Cam enough for helping me out with this. I started off as this kid with no knowledge of cars what so ever and now i have alot more knowledge to where i can start my build. Jim really helped me learn alot and i cant thank him enough. Ive asked so many questions (some more then once tongue.gif ) and Jim put up with it all and helped me out so much. again i cant thank him enough. Jim and Shannons builds were a big inspiration to me. but anyway, thats enough of my thoughts haha. I have been ordering parts. I have the I/C, t3/t4 turbo, SAFCII, boost guage, walbro fuel pump, rx7 injectors,HKS BOV, guage pod, and several parts on the way. I am welding a 10an fitting to the 5sfe oil pan instead of the 3s pan. I will be making the custom DP. I will be running an ACT performance clutch and a full 3" exhaust with no res. I will be replacing the water pump and the timing belt as well. My head gasket is composite so i will be upgrading that to metal. I plan on running around 14psi. I will be posting pics of the parts i have later on in the day. I honestly cant wait for this. Its something ive been wanting to do for so long. Its finally becoming a reality.

~Brent~

Your plan sounds pretty well thought out.

I wouldn't really worry about the ebay turbo as much as people might say. It's only a matter of time until any turbo fails but the question with a cheap ebay turbo is how it's going to do it and what kind of damage will follow. Shannon's has held up pretty well so far and she's putting some serious pressure through it.

What I do think you should reconsider is drilling and tapping the 5S oil pan as opposed to just using a 3S oil pan. Drilling and tapping anything is much more at risk to leak than a stock component that's made to not leak and last a long time. If I had the option on the 7A to just swap oil pans instead of drilling and tapping my upper oil pan I definitely would, you have that option and I think you should take advantage of it. Just my $0.02, like you said, it's your car and you will do with it what you want. I wish you luck either way.

No im gonna pass on that. ill stick with the 5s pan. the weld will be fine. and theres no strain so the weld wont break or anything. ive seen plenty of turbo setups on other cars that add the 10an fitting on. i mean look at teh mistu guys, the honday guys, and the mazda guys. most of them all just add the fitting and they are fine.

Just spend the extra $35 to get an oil pan that has it in already, one less thing to worry about. My buddy tapped his and had problems with it leaking and having to re-tap it...etc, etc. It's just not worth the hassle or the risk. And his was done at a shop, not by himself.

Rule 1. Don't cheap out on the small stuff.

Seems like I waste of an argument. I can only see using the 3s pan if running a CT based turbo, other wise....I see no point. Every other car that doesn't have an accessible oil pan, welds a 10an to there pan and have been doing so for years with NO problems.

There is nothing wrong with welding in a 10an weld fitting to the stock pan, this is not "cheaping" out. I cant see the point in Buying a 3s pan to add an apter fitting to it, to adapt to a 10an line, when you can just weld a 10an weld fitting directly to the factory 5s pan. Like Brent said....This is how Hondas due it, Fords, Chevys, etc.....and have been doing so for years.

Does buying a 3s pan for 50bucks and buying an adapter fitting for 25 bucks work.....Yes

Does buying a 10 or 12an weld fitting, welded to your stock 5s oil pan for $6.00 work just as well....Yes

X2 you guys are kinda pushy on your beliefs imo
yea, i gotta agree with jim on this one, while i "prefer" using the 3s pan, a properly welded fitting onto a 5s pan will work just fine.
and ya cant really argue with "free" now, can ya?
lookin forward to the results, brent!

Yes, a properly welded fitting will work fine, key word being properly. IMO, I would rather eliminate the risk by using a factory pan. Either way, goodluck and can't wait to see some progress on this project.

That was pretty much what I was getting at. But can't beat free I guess. It's not like I'm against welding a fitting to the pan, that's how I have with my return line.

cant wait to see this boosted tangerine put up some #s...

BANNED. for life, you moron.
Just to end the oil pan dilemma. The oil pan is my old 5S pan, and the fittting is being welded on my the welding instructor at my college. He has been welding for over 35 years and his "weekend job" is welding tube race chassis together. I feel as though a man who puts other peoples lives in the balance of his welds will have NO problem with an oil return fitting on an oil pan. Enough said.

Also...Yes, this is a budget build. However, this is NOT the first turbo setup I have ever installed. Its easier for me to list the cars WITHOUT turbos that I've worked on, rather than list the turbo cars. Brent's setup will be VERY similar, if not almost identicle to Shannons setup. Jim has helped oversee this build along with myself, so Brent is in very good hands.

think ill just use 5s oil pan then, learn new things everyday. cant wait to see progress!!!
time to speak from experience. I am a welder, iv welded enough fittings to oil pans for friends who have boosted, and down pipes etc etc. if it is done properly (which doesnt take alot of effort) it will be fine, i have fixed a few of other people's bubble gum screw ups were they have brazed the fitting on and it leaked, but iv never had any issues with mine, iv never had anyone come back yet telling me one of my weld's failed. part of my guarantee is a free repair if it fails, 3 years running and no complaints or returns yet thumbsup.gif that being said.
good luck Brent, i am anxious to see that lil orange fly! no doubt you guys will do the 6thgen fam proud with a sick budget build! make us proud.....

i hate snow, missing my celica
hey good luck man hope its all g for you.....because im right behind you also 5SFTE ALL DAY BABY!!!!!
YES, its time to get the sleeping giant some recognition.
