Was going to do a DIY on the valve gasket. and was needing specs, torque and where to apply rtv on a 5sfe
Is there a how to for valve gasket 5sfe - 6G Celicas Forums
Well the process is simple just remove the big nuts around the spark plug wells with a socket, I believe it's 30 or 31 mm I don't remember, it's the same size as the axle nuts. As for RTV you don't really need it since it's a rubber gasket, but if you apply it just use it on the corners and sharp bends, mostly just to keep it in place while you re-install the valve cover. The torque specs are pretty low, I don't remember them off the top of my head but they are something like 14-17 ft-lbs (please correct me if I am wrong, been a long time since I was a mechanic lol).

I found it, it is 17 ft-lbs is there an order for tightening the four nuts?
You DO need to apply the RTV. There are many threads about people not using it only to discover it leaks after installation.
Reseal the half moons with FIPG when youre doing it. Apply FIPG at the seems of the half moon-to-head and in the corners of the end caps. It is a 30MM. socket and I always tighten the two middle nuts first then the outer ones, then repeat until all the nuts are tight.
Where did you guys find the torque spec. of 17ft/lbs.?

i just did mine. FIPG was not needed but was recommended for use at the corners and the half moon section. ive been running it for a month and no leaks.
it is always handy to have some Toyota FIPG but if you cant get any at the time, its ok.
oh and i might as well say it here, get FIPG instead of RTV. FIPG is a thicker substance and is more reliable.

Hmmm i didnt use FIPG when i changed my gaskets and havent had a problem, and I do recommend also you tighten the centers first
Here I hope this helps a little, pics from when I did mine, the seal on the head is the old one

So i just replaced my valve cover gasket today and i found that the guy before me had applied RTV around the corners and half moons. when i took off the valve cover, all of that dried up RTV fell into the engine. it took me about an hour with tweesers to get it all out. i really don't recommend using that stuff..if anything use, FIPG. i didn't use any today simply because i didn't have any. but i'll just see how it works for now. i didn't use any on my last celi and i didnt have any problems with it.
