I've been looking around the internet for guides to painting calipers, and they seem to vary a lot and none of them are for celicas specifically. I was wondering if anyone on here who has done it has any method(s) that they feel works well. Thanks!

P.S I dont have a whole lot of experience so far with cars so a simple method would be appreciated

Well, First you need to jack the car up, then take the wheel off, and support the car with an axle stand.

Brush off any loose rust with a wire brush, clean any grease off and dry them fully.

then you just paint them

It's fine to paint them on the car, no need to disassemble anything. Just don't get any on the brake discs, or any obvious moving parts.

Always use a brush-on paint, not spray.

Not sure of US brands, but i use Japlac, or hammerite, or a specific calliper paint from an auto store.

DO NOT USE THE SPRAY PAINT!!!!

-jack the car
-remove tire
-hose off brakes with water
-dis-assemble caliper
-do not remove brake line
-have like a crate or box to hold the caliper up
-clean with brake cleaner 1 can per caliper
-get a wire brush or something to really clean caliper
-hose off using brake cleaner
-go wet a towel and wipe down the caliper (seriously wipe it down good)
-start taping and masking off what you dont want painted
-BUY A DIFFERENT BRUSH!! DO NOT USE KIT BRUSH. THE BRUSH HAIRS WILL FALL OFF WHILE USING IT!! BADD!!!!!!

-carefully apply 1 thin layer
-let dry
-apply 1 more layer (thin)
-let air dry for 10 mins
-apply 3rd and final layer (thin)

-remove tape and any masking stuff carefully.

-let paint cure over night and then some.

-when paint is cured and dried for about 20hrs atleast assemble everything CAREFULLY!!!!

Had my high temp spray painted calipers - nothing wrong with it.

Why does spray paint not work? Is it too thin? no flex or just preference?

Spray paint in my experience will not last very long.

Plus, if you're not going to disassemble the callipers and paint them away from the car, you're going to get it on things that shouldn't be painted....

Sounds pretty straight forward, thanks for the step by step 808celica. On a side note, where can i get decals for my calipers that say "celica"?

i use dupi-color high temp caliper paint and have had great results with it...takes about an hour to dry and your good to go...i always spray them twice a year...once before summer and once at the end...doesnt take to long...only reason i give them 2 coats a year is because the brake dust builds up and sticks on there pretty good...espically when they get hot...i think the paint works great

Yeah, i guess that's the difference with brush on. It gives a thick glossy finish that's easier to clean. I only re-do mine about every 3 years

i took em of, gave em service, rebuild and painted. makes it a lot easier outside of the car. but it takes longer.

I used (Brush-on) High Temperature (Enamel) Engine Paint
Works a treat, gloss coat finish and doesn't come off when you jet wash it

I've got a really cheap and retarded quick method I have used for years that comes out really nice and somewhat dust repellant - been meaning to do a how-to on it forever. I even have the pics for the how-to ready to go. I'll get around to it soon.
Here's the jist of it tho - just tape off anything you don't want painted:

Duplicolor Caliper Spray works Great and if you use the same clear in several coats over it it becomes somewhat dust repellant like I said.

you know... that is what i had in my mind, before looking at this thread...

but i want to paint them either black or read,,,
and paint the letters TRD or CELICA,,, but i dont know if
that is going to be really hard,,i have seen the calipers that say celica,, but thats another story cuz they come like that.
has someone done it like that?
or am i getting involved in a disaster?

You would be better buying caliper decals from ebay.

I had Celica ones on mine:

spray painting was pretty easy to me. My car is even white. Mask using foil. The brush causes line streaks.

Those decals, how do they hold up?

i guess it depends who you buy them from, but specific caliper decals are temp resistant vinyl and mine lasted years until i painted over them.
