PS3 HDMI connectivity - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #64415 49 posts Started by RickJamesBish
Since I'm a cheap SOB, I'd like to know if I'm getting the right stuff before I buy. I'm looking to go 720p for my PS3, connecting to the TV with an HDMI cable and to the 7.1 surround with a digital optical audio cable, if that's the right one. I'm going generic, and as far as I know there's no special version of an HDMI cable necessary?

First choice being preferred, it's what I need as far as I know?

And one of these for the surround part?

Thanks people. biggrin.gif
I'm a firm believer that gold plated is FTMFW; but you can get those generic too... HDMI cable linked is fine... The audio port though, is all wrong. look at the pic, you'll need a wire to have 2 of the "square-shaped' ports, not some random other wire. lol.

i'll try to find you one right quick.

I know there are other "better" ones, but AFAIK, these work and an HDMI cable is an HDMI cable. Good thing I asked, I knew I farked up somewhere. biggrin.gif So what is the one I need called?

Actually dude, how do you know that the audio cable will work with my surround? I think it does have that input, but I'm not at that house so I can't check. kindasad.gif

compare your equipment, then shop biggrin.gif

HDMI depends on your inputs... does your receiver have an HDMI v1.3 input for Dolby TrueHD? if so, just HDMI from the PS3 to the receiver, and that'll pass your audio and video, then hook another HDMI from your receiver to your LCD/Plasma. If you don't have this, well, then you're stuck with 5.1, cuz that's all you can pass over that Toslink IIRC. only Dolby Digital. nonetheless, go ahead and get at least 1 HDMI, but like i said... compare your equipment first, then shop. if you can't figure out if you have HDMI v1.3 on your receiver, just look at the back, then the front. If it has HDMI, then look on the front for Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD. If it has these, your golden. If not, toslink that thing.

from what i've figured out is that an HDMI cable is an HDMI cable, i've gone with cheap and expensive, and they work the same... so for $10, here ya go: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16812189173

Toslink (fiber cable)
depending on your setup, square to plug or square to square, respectively:

hope this helps.

btw, what model tv and receiver are you running? that will help us help you biggrin.gif

Now that you mention it...you might be onto something. The TV is a 42" Panasonic Viera and the surround system is also Panasonic, the receiver does have HDMI inputs. It's only a CD/DVD player, so it wouldn't have HD Dolby then? I know for a fact is has regular Dolby support...

I'll get back to this thread when I check up tonight. Is there a difference between the one I posted earlier or the one you posted now? The other one was only $4.99.

This one should work if my receiver is compatible as well.

eyah, that cable is just fine.

Alright, I'll check it out tonight...but the first combo is good if it doesn't have HD Dolby? Both units are about two years old, so I can't find the specs online.

in all honesty, you could hook up the ps3 to the tv via the component (red/green/blue) cables up to 1080i (including 720p), if you want to go that route, but that cable's more expensive, so i don't know why i'm mentioning this. but yeah, cheap HDMI and cheap toslink cable and you're good. just make sure the ends of your toslink match your gear.

HDMI is digital - there's no "distortion" or anything like that. Either the signal gets there or it doesn't. You don't need $100 Monster cables that are gold plated or anything.

>why only 720p What kind of tv are you using?

42" Pana Viera, only goes to 1080i AFAIK- and 720p > 1080i, also AFAIK. But I can always see about that.

Receiver is Pro Logic II- but I saw no digital optical out, only HDMI among AUX out, component, and several antennas. So this means HDMI connection straight to the PS3?

EDIT: other thing- I have the 40GB model, means only one HDMI output. So I'm probably stuck with just running HDMI to the TV and not having any surround? kindasad.gif

so you have component input on the surround, use the OEM audio/video plug to go from the ps3 to the receiver, and the hdmi cable from the ps3 to the tv, and if you can run it at 1080i, that's what i'd run it on. um... all ps3's only have one hdmi output, i was talking about the receiver earlier... anyway, hook it up like i said, looks like you don't need the toslink (unless you plan on upgrading your receiver in the future). btw, the HDMI connection on the receiver i'm guessing is an output to the tv for upscaling DVD's. any more questions just LMK.

I'm running the audio cables to the receiver right now with the video split off to the TV...so replacing that video cable with HDMI is what you're saying, and I can run everything with video in HDMI mode and the sound with the regular cables? Alright.

yes, that's it.

Okay, surprised there's no other option for sound...didn't know the receiver was that crappy. kindasad.gif

But thanks for the help man. biggrin.gif
no prob, PM me when you go to upgrade receivers, i'll help you shop biggrin.gif

Ehh it's my mom's system and TV anyway, not happening. biggrin.gif But I'll gladly help you invest fo sho.
I have a 42'' Panasonic Viera plasma and it's 1080p. Doesn't mean yours is but mine is.

My video is HDMI and my audio is optical, but your receiver will need to have optical also.

Pretty sure it's 1080i, but I'll see when the cable comes in. My receiver sadly does not have an optical input, and only one HDMI out. But my Viera is the older model with a grey frame, not the newer ones with a black finish.
Oh ok - your receiver is probably HDMI pass-through which should really just be called "HDMI switching" because that's all it is, a switch. I felt this was pointless because the audio isn't even being taken from there and it was a waste.

MyFlickrMyeBay_Perpetual Aperture_
^^ that's ghey~ ^^

My audio goes thru my HDMI and it sounds fantastic! I suppose the digital audio is a good option when you've got some ghey "switching" though.

No, digital optical isn't even an option, I don't have one of those inputs either. So sprynt, what are you saying exactly? I have no other choice but to just run it through like I am right now correct?

If you have true HDMI True-HD sound your receiver cost upwards of $500.

If you don't have optical, and only HDMI pass through you're going to end up using component (red/yellow/white), except you won't be using the yellow which is video, you'll be using HDMI. On the PS3 you'll want to set the video to HDMI and the audio to component on the audio options.
