Hi gang, I was just wondering if I was charged the correct amount for replacing my 1994 ST clutch. My mechanic, who has always worked on my car (and does very good job) charged me $540 for the labor! Does that sounds like a lot? I supplied the part and on the bill, it indicates: 6 hours @$90 per hour +tax (7% in NJ) for a grand total of $577.80. I did not ask him before hand how much it would be (my mistake), but I thought it was in the $350 to $400 range, so I was shocked when I saw $577.80. Or do you guys think that it is unreasonable to think that it would cost bet $350-$400?

And last, I want to install a TRD quickshifter, for those of you that have done the install on yours, is it something that can be done withouth the help of a mechanic? I am pretty handy (but not handy enough to change a clutch )

thats about right.
toyota gets ~800 for the job.

trd shifter can be installed with basic hand tools in under an hr.

wow thats cheap! mine went as far as 1000$ to replace the clutch (parts + labor + some other minor things)

6 hours of labor sounds normal and borders on fairly quick for a mechanic who knows what he's doing. You got out pretty good. If the $577.80 includes parts, then you got a steal. If you had to do the clutch yourself, you'd understand why

Thanks guys for your replies, it makes me feel better. I actually did supplied the clutch, but by your responses, it seems that he did charged me a fair price for the labor.

I will be ordering the TRD quickshifter soon, but I think that I can tackle that

ya other than pulling the spacers out its pretty easy...if you have some spray adhesive to hold the spacers on when you put the shift assembly in that helps, and unless you dont mind cutting the doofer then you gotta take those panels...check out the how to it explains it all

OMG Really DAm!! $577 for labor that is expensive. Well i was asking around here where i live in So Cal, and like 2 or 3 places i got quoted like 500 for parts and labor. But usually shops that buy a clutch use cheap ones that cost around $150. and a couple other places quoted me like $250-$350 for labor only. and also resurfacing flywheel is a good thing to do while your at it. only costs like $40. Im glad im getting my clutch done by a friend for $180 at his house. And toyota dealers charge $800 for parts and labor wow thats alot too. But a Oem for the celi does cost around $350

I had it done here for $750 and that was considered cheap. 3rd rate mechanic wanted to charge me $900 Plus the flywheel (resurfacing). These guys got it right the first time but failed to do the flywheel or something, because it is slipping again if I drive normal. When I drive really slow, it is all good. Still under warranty, so taking it in.

yeah man, 6 hours to change the clutch is pretty quick for 1 mechanic

me and my friend did mine and it took us 10 hours, lol

I paid $800 last January from a local shop that does good work. parts+labor

577 doesn't sound that bad to me.

I paid $150 to get my clutch installed then $300 for the clutch. Mine was done by my friend who works at a shop but did it as a side job. Done around 3 hours about.

My daddys a Master Toyota Tech......... thank god!
