Hi guys, im planning on buying 2 x Alpine speakers 6.5" and buying a sony DAB 52w RMS head unit.

Now I have heard that Type R speakers may require an amp to get the maximum quality sound and loudness. Is this true?

What about type S speakers? Is it not required to use an amp as its less power?

I ran type s 2 ways off my head unit and they were fine, and my pioneer componets are goin ok off the head unit, they both are rated about 50 watts rms i think...but of course a amp always helps. I think they mine are rated like 2-50 watts rms or something like that, just dont turn it up to where u get distortion and you should be fine.
btw crutchfield's knowledge base is a excellent resource for any questions like this, im on there alot when shopping for car audio stuff.

You can add an amp to maximize the sound, but they're completely fine off the head unit's amp. I have four Type-S running off of a 4x50 Pioneer.

you will not get full performance without powering the type r's with an amp, i had my type r's runnin of my alpine 9885 they sounded good at lower volumes but they distorted at higher volumes a HU will not provide you the potential of those components, buy a good 2 channel amp, and never look back you wont regret it, after installing my 2 channel to the type r's i was impress with there performance, good bang for the buck components.

go with the type r's, amp em and watch them shine, same goes for the type S, just speaking from experience, an amp makes a huge diference compare to the HU.

I actually paid attention today...my fronts are fine, they distort a tiny tiny bit at higher volumes, but that's because of the bass and whatever else.

However, my rears, not even at high volume, are just distorted. It doesn't make sense to me that the fronts would work fine and the rears wouldn't. Is there a way around this or do I just need a capable, but not too expensive amp?

You will hear a big diference with an amp even at lower volumes, amping components makes a big diference, either with bass or not the amp will not cause distortion unlike the HU, and it all has to do with proper tunin too. Idk why your rear ones are acting like that, but a 4 channel alpine, memphis or RF amp would do justice, they carry cheap ones on ebay.

Thanks for that info...it's just sort of annoying, because now I know it's there. I've just never heard of needing to have speakers amped.

I have two-ways though, not components. If I do get an amp, it'll probably be at a later time so I can pair it with a singe sub.

As for the speakers, u should go to a store and listen to them yourself. When it comes to speakers you can't just rely on numbers and specs. Everyone has different hearing and different tastes. Some speakers perform differently for different genre's.

My personal recommendation, if you just need some speakers get the type S's w/o an amp and it'll get the job done. If you want a very nice setup and got the money, get the type R's, and amp them. I wouldn't run Type R's w/o an amp.

Listening to equipment in the store compare to how there going sound in the car is a total diferent scenario on how there going to sound. ive owned both type s and type r comps i just liked how they sounded better on my amp, surprysingly the type s's sounded more natural than the type r's. type r's got louder though.

From all the components i had, all of them played any genre fine, it all comes down to the proper tunin and messin around with it.

****, this sucks. It looks like I'm gonna have to get an amp, as my deck only pushes out 4x50. My fronts are fine, the rears just sound distorted. If I use each independently, they're fine, but as soon as I fade the rears in with the fronts, it's fuller but more distorted.

So audiophiles, what do I need to power these babies?
