August 2004 - Bearings go in 5S-FE
- time to look for a new motor.
- investigate ALL motor options available.
- I choose a lower maintenance route which would be non-turbo. most likely another 5S engine.

September 2004 - October 2004 - Start searching for an engine durring spare time.

November 2004 - Locate an engine
- I discover that a guy in town here has a BEAMS engine for sale and I buy it pronto.

Dec 2004 - August 2005 - Collect data and parts.
- I only had an engine,ECU and harness so many other parts had to be purchased.
- slowly worked on harness modifications while waiting for parts.
- had many problems with wiring as ignition is a direct fire system.

September 2005 - Found BEAMS wiring manual in New Zealand...(BINGO)
- start working on car with renewed effort.

October 10 2005 - Swap complete.

October 27 2005
- something happens to the tranny and I have no reverse or 5th gear.

Febuary 06 2006 - transmission repaired.
- It turned out to be internal shift linkage coming apart

Now on the road and driving

1994 GT-S (BEAMS) swap complete
The car has been running for a while now but I have finally go tthe CEL off! I now considered it complete....3rd Gen 3sgte into a 94 ST.
Unfortunately it is not easy for me to tell you all the details because of my poor English, but i will try!
Thanks to a mechanical with great imagination and his great team, i swap my 95 St to 95 GT-four with complete installation of engine, electical system, brakes and of course AWD.
My vision was to swap just the engine in my st and use the mr2 transmission to make it front wheel drive because i thought that it was impossible to install the AWD.
So we were looking for the half front car to be imported from japan. About a week later the guy who is in the used parts importing called us and he told that ha had found a nice 95 gt-four, with only 35000 kms on for a price of 3000 euros, and for just 500 more, he could send along the rear parts (the car had to be cutted in half to be legally imported as spare parts).
I thought that the rear part would be useless to me, but the mechanical was mad, and told me no to loose this chance..
So about two months later, we had all the parts in the garage..
The car had propably fall from the road to a field or something and the top was destroyed (turned upside down), all the windows were broken, the seats too but the engine bay was in great condition.
My mechanic was working for 20 days and he managed to fit the awd system. It was the most difficult part of everything!! For the st engine removal and the fitting of the new one, he was working for 5 days, and the rest was to fit the awd block(!!) as his team was installing brakes, suspension, airbags and all the rest parts.
When they finished, we had to do some modifications to the exhaust system, as for the electrical too.
The cost for all the services was 2400 euros, plus 800 more for parts that we had to buy new from toyota.
Total cost=6700 euros. If i add the 12000 euros that i paid for my car, we have a total amount of 18.700 euros for a 95 Gt-four.. Maybe i could buy an original with less money but thats the way it works!!
The car was a very pleseant surprise because the unlucky japanese owner had done great job with engine modifications, and the dyno test gave us a report for 328Hp instead of the 255 that the specifications were telling about. I wish i knew him, because there are a lot of questions that i would like to ask!!
I am wondering if it was the same difficult for you too to make this kind of swap!!

Just finished my swap a few weeks ago on my 94 St. its a 2nd Gen 3sgte with 92 mr2 e-153 tranny. I used mr2 innershafts and 94 V6 camry axels. used american gt pass. side mount, st185 driver's side mount/bracket, st204 front engine mount/bracket, st815 rear braket and jdm st205 rear mount. I used stock shift cables. Engine harness was done by DG Performance (highly recomended). Used st185 throtte cable (with minor modification to the firewall braket) Kept power steering using a power steering pressure hose from a 94 celica GT and about a foot of rubber return line. Changed the hose from hell/on earth while i had the motor out and while i took the stock downpipe off. (makes things easier). upgrades for now include a xspower 3in downpipe, 3in madrel bent custom exhaust with a gutted cat and Vibrant Flat Black Muffler, K&N FIPK air filter with adaptor bracket to the MAF, denso iridium spark pulgs, ngk wires. Using Greddy Block adaptor for oil temp guage. If you have any questions about the swap feel free to ask me. I did the swap myself with some help from friends. Good Luck to any future swappers!
Completed a couple weeks ago. Eggman40 helped me a lot, any SoCal guys that need help on a 3s swap, hit this guy up. He is very helpful and knowledgeable.

2nd Gen 3sgte in a 1994 Celica GT
Front Mount Intercooler
Custom Downpipe & Greddy SP2 Cat-Back Exhaust

This engine hauls! 3rd, 4th and 5th gear is as great as 1st and 2nd. Driving around with a 3s under the hood makes me feel like I'm king of the road.

hey guys, i have been looing up and down on the net to find any sort of info on a particular part of this following swap:

1998 3SGE BEAMS into a 1992 Celica GT

it all works (usefull hint: use original driveshafts because the BEAMS shafts are longer by an inch on both sides, other than that all matches up), got it started on pretty much the first try, huge DUH at not connecting the battery first time.....
Anywho, i got the gauges cluster for the original BEAMS as it came with the clip, just the dash wiring harnass was missing......rather i never made sure to have it included. My question is, does any of you have any experience with an old mechanical Speedometer & Electric Tach to building in an entire Electrical Gauges Cluster, so say something like a ST184 to ST202/ST204 conversion cluster? im trying to find the dash wiring diagram to an ST202 to see if i can't find my bearings in this ocean.
Thanks!

12 Februari 2006:
Bought a complete GT4 wreck. JDM 3S-GTE with 60K miles on it. Things I could use/take from it

GT4 Rear Strut Bar + Leather Hose
GT4 Front Brakes
GT4 Hood
GT4 Bumper parts (bumper itself destroyed)
GT4 Engine+ everything needed (fuel pump etc etc)

Beginning of May:
Sold many stuff of the car in the period. Got the car picked up by a Mechanic to take out the engine and extend the wiring loom.

19th of May:
Brought my car to the guy the swap the engine in.

20th of May:
Old 3S-GE engine was pulled out. Installed new stock Clutch and switched the tranny onto the 3S-GTE

21th of May:
3S-GTE was put into the car.

22-25 of May:
Electronics done, switched fuel pumpes/ relays/igniters etc etc. Installed GT4 Intercooler+ W2A Heat Xchanger welded new temp exhaust pipe from elbow to back axle.

Car started immediatly after everything was put back. Did a few spins, no need for finetuning of compenents, only had to wait for a new flexpipe to be welded as the old one had a few minor holes in it.

26th of May:
Welding was done car was finished, only had no time picking it up.

27th of May:
Me and my nephew went to get the car. Took it for a spin there. The smile hasn't come of my face since then biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

So this guys swapped the everything needed in only 5 days of work. Total hours he spend on the swap.
Saterday: 4 hours
Sunday: 4 hours
Monday: 2 hours
Thuesday: 2 hours
Whensday: 3 hours
Thursday: 3 hours
Friday: 15 minutes

Swap completed in under 19 hours of work.

JDM Powerplant installed, BPU coming very soon!
I finished my swap on December 30, 2006. I put a 1991 JDM st185 engine into my 1995 celica gt. I bought the engine, awd transmission, ecm, uncut harness, afm, fuel pump & injector resistor in March 2006. I spent 8 months in what little spare time I do have doing the harness and gathering the money for the swap. The engine and assembly I got off ebay for $1400 shipped. I spent another $500 on the clutch, boost press. sensor, walbro fuel pump, boost gauge and misc.
I wired in the fuel pump resistor using a supra turbo relay. I put the pump in the night before I did the swap. I drove the car for a while. The swap itself took 9 hours in my garage with a jack and jack stands. That includes modifying the stock gt motor mount and making an adaptor for the throttle cable. When I went to start the car I first turned the key to the on position, then cycled the key, and checked for codes.
When I tried to start it it cranked but wouldnt start. I didnt have any spark. I did however have a code 12 (no ne or g signal from the distributer) To make a very long story short, I spent the next two weeks trying to diagnose this issue. After speaking with Dr. Tweak:bowdown: he knew what was wrong, he had the exact same thing happen to him. The swap came with the ecm, the part number was89661-2B280.
LIST PROVIDED BY lagos
JDM 185 ecu's-
89661-20750=89/10-90/03(superceeded to 20751)
89661-20751=90/03-91/08
89661-2b310=91/08-92/02
89661-2b280=91/08-93/09
As you can see my ecm should be 89661-20751. Someone down the line put the wrong year ecu with my swap! The different years have different pinouts! I bought a used ecu, plugged it in and it started! Here I am. I have to say that I just about lost my mind after countless hours of diagnoses. Its a good thing everyone (especially Dr. Tweak) came in when they did. So here I am.
On to the next topic. My car only boosts to 5-7 psi. Since I have the top mount intercooler I tryed taking my hood off to cool it off since I dont have a hood scoop. After 5 minutes of driving I started boosting to 7-9 psi. Thus, I need a front mount intercooler.
Thanks to everyone for all the insight! biggrin.gif

2nd gen 3sgte swap.

I know everyone said to get a clip. But to be honest, IF you can find all the parts needed for the swap in a motor set DO IT. Thats what I did. I didn't even lable anything, because its such a straight forward swap. I also had some key parts left over from my 5s turbo set-up and I'll tell you this much. The 5s turbo compared to the 3s is like night and day.

>My car originally started out as a 1995 Toyota Celica ST (7AFE, Automatic Transmission).

I know have a 4AGE 20v Silvertop powered Celica. Also changed the transmission to a 5 speed manual. My engine is stock for the moment with only an Aftermarket 3" Air Filter, Greddy Cat-Back Exhaust, and No Catalytic Converter.

I purchased the Front Clip from Jarco for roughly $1000 shipped from GA to FL. The auto to manual pieces were sourced from TAP Recycling and totaled $250. I had a shop do the actual install of the motor and wiring; I sourced all information needed to perform the swap: Toyota Repair Manual(s) and Toyota Wiring Diagrams, 4AGE 20v ECU Pin-Outs, etc. I also have various part numbers regarding maintence pieces (timing belt, water pump, distributor, etc.) for the 4AGE 20v.

The performance is a much needed boost from an automatic ST Celica. Although I believe the engine is not running at its full potential at the moment. I know that there is a fuel issue with my engine, I'm running lean in the upper RPM's. I believe that if I run higher octane fuel and use a fuel controller (S-AFC) it will correct some of the power problems.

Other than that, I've been running the 4AGE 20v with no engine problems whatsoever. Its is definitely a smooth revving engine and has potential that is just waiting to be unleashed.

hey im doing the same swap can u give me ecu advise cas the third clip is gone and the maf sensors clips cut also soo i need some advise thanks
there will be a swapped celica at the nky ohio meet coming up in may, you should come, link in my sig

Here's how I did the swap

Hey man mind sending he how you did the swap? Also wondering for the st where the engine mount was different? some said rear others said passenger side of the engine.
wondering if it would also work with a 5sfe for temporary use just to get the car going.
