ok so i was going to my buddies house and the car died while in motion. pulled out the spark plug tester and i'm getting no spark. i'm curious how do you check if the timing belt snapped? also how would i know if it was my dizzy?

same problem here but i start it back up in 10 min and it runs like normal but then if i run it for to long agian it dies out agian.. 95' gt? coincidence or it happends to most?

Pull off the dizzy cap and have someone crank the motor. If the t-belt is intact you should see the rotor spin.

ok the rotor is not spinning... so its safe to say that its my timing belt right? i've never done a timing belt before but i found a guide online for the 5s. how long would it take to replace it normally?
its for a mr2 but since it is the same engine i'd figure it would be the same.
i'm going to take a crack at it this weekend. anyone got any tips for me?

umm....if ur belt goes doesnt that mean ur valves are gonna be bent/cooked?
i hate snow, missing my celica
i do believe its a non interference engine
If the belt snapped, you won't have to worry because the 5S is a non-interference motor (thank God Toyota did that).

It means your valves won't collide with your pistons when they are open and the piston comes up (happens when the timing belt breaks).

Basically it means that if you snap a timing belt while driving, you won't damage your internals (if it's not non-interference you can break/bend valves among other fun stuff).

May I add that "other fun stuff" includes a huge repair bill and a lesson learned

ok so my buddy and i cranked it out and replaced the belt. now it makes a rinding noise when i rev, did i over tighten the belt or is that normal? and when i was doing the timing the notch was slightly to the right of 0 is that retarded or advanced?
>
Retarded??? It sounds like it's advanced but I'm not certain. I'm so so happy that the celica engines are non inteference - I too broke my timing belt last year. I got it fixed with new water pump by mechanic for $600 aus. Bit expensive but oh well...

i believe... and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that when the car is running and you are checking the timing with the timing gun, you should be around 10...
The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed?
if it is making that sound it could either be the accessory belt or the timing. which should have set at the org point.
when i replaced mine my accessory belt was too tight. so i adjusted the alternator to loosen it a bit. it still whine a tiiiny bit but not to a point of concern

get a new alternator and have it on hand, the bearings in your current one have been damaged by the overtightened belt.

i had same problem when i had my 90 celica st, my car just died when i was driving, and there was no spark, so i changed the distribuitor coil, and the car runs again!! but that celica have a electronic coil.

who me? when it was whining it was only for 2 minutes when i started the car after i put everything back together. then i loosened it. it is fine now. it probably whines for a little bit once a week

If its your accessory belt, loosen it and then put some belt conditioner or belt dressing.

I had no idea a car dying could be all these other things. Mine was doing that and I asked for a jump, died again within seconds as I began to drive. So I figured it was the alternator. Changed it, didn't have that problem again. But what the fellas are telling you, are also things to consider. I guess that is why it is always important to diagnos a problem before assuming it is 1 thing and trying to fix that. In case some of you out there do not fix your own car and take it to shops. Which there is nothing wrong with that at all by the way. I used to do that until I got ripped off but not everyone is dishonest.
