Insufficient EGR Flow...? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #62093 17 posts Started by nightryder
ok so i threw a CEL and I came up with a "Insufficient EGR Flow"

I'm going to start working on it now, but if anyone has some insight I would love to hear it!

The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed?
replace it or attempt to clean it with cleaner.
yeah i figured... just wantd someone elses .02

Nate, pull off the EGR, clean it and clean the filter in it (on top) and take off the metal tube that goes from the EGR to the head, clean it out good and try to clean out the hole where the tube goes into the head.

how difficult is it to take off the EGR? just a couple fittings?

You say you don't understand how we go dumb, but have you ever been where i'm from?-=-] Livin it in tha bay's a lil different [-=-
on a 5sfe, it's a pain in the hassle. lol. It's whats kept me for doing mine for a while. (i've got an infant though, so i've got limited working time) The big tube that Batman was talking about, is like a 24 or 26MM and it's a pain to get to. You have to go between the head and the throttle body/air intake area. The line cannot be taken off directly by the EGR (atleast it isn't possible for me frown.gif )

Clean that filter first though!! I cleaned mine and that was that. (i'll come on for a few miles about every 2 weeks or so) but i've got to goto the toyo dealer when it opens back up (recent hurricane devistated my local toyo place) and buy a new one. Also, check all your hoses to see that nothing is clogged up.

Try that first, then if it fails, go ahead and clean it out. EGR's dont really go "bad" I'd replace all the hoses & filters before buying a new one.

Hope it helps. G/L.

It's not that hard to get off, as long as you have tools that can fit in the small working area. 2 nuts that hold the EGR in place and then unscrew the metal pipe where it connects to the manifold, not where it connects to the EGR. Card cleaner the crap out of it, give it a good scrub. (I'm going to have to look for this filter. I never knew there was one when I cleaned mine. is it hard to get off?)
not difficult at all. Just a little bit harder than removing the vac lines laugh.gif

It's the UFO shaped cylinder next door (to the left) of the EGR itself. Pop off the black top, and there it is... *Sparkle* *Sparkle* lol, it probably wont sparkle though frown.gif , You can wash it with water and a dry towel. make sure it's dry before you put it back in.

Cool. I'll have to give that a shot. When I cleaned just the egr, pipe, etc, it lasted for quite a while without throwing codes, but it eventually came back like a year later.
that's probably your filter making that code then. or one of the smaller vac lines having gyunk in it.

Clean the filter and check the rubber hoses first, then go thru the trouble of pulling and cleaning the main-vain... Then if that fails, Replace. biggrin.gif Sometimes the simplest (and cheapest wink.gif ) solution is the best thumbsup.gif

Although sometimes not frown.gif

But trouble shoot from easiest to hardest. Saves the most money.

I dont remember... it was awhile ago... And NgoFcukway ran and counted the code, And DEATH looked it up for me. I was busy messing with something else. (sometimes we have Car-Fix Parties; Like a party, but instead of dancing; We repair cars. We still drink though tongue.gif )

I tried popping off the top but couldn't do it. do i twist the top or wat?

no. It pops. Like a milk cap.

If you're standing facing the car, It's too the left of the EGR. Use your fingernail or a flathead screwdriver if you must. IIRC you gotta put a little bit of force into it. Dont break it though, it's only plastic. lol. But it dosen't come off easy, its not made to be changed often... if ever...
