3sgte guys/gals what clutch are you running? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #61072 31 posts Started by darthripley
I'm trying to decide on which clutch to get - now we have a ST185 - but all 2nd & 3rd gen 3SGTE's use the same clutch whether they are SW20's ST185's or ST205's.

So, I'm looking at an Exedy Hyper Single here: http://www.exedyusa.com/corp/TH02SD

the car is slightly modified - currently have a CT27 running 10-12-14psi (depending on weather) + supporting mods.
i will be upgrading to a ST205 tranny & want to change the clutch while i am there to something that isn't as heavy as the stock or whatever one that is in there now.

i am planning on going to a KO SB GT3071R kit in a year or 2 so i want something that will be able to hold the torque possibly close to 300awtq.
i want the clutch to be as comfortable as possible, sprung & good quality --> not like a Spec Stage III which throws its cookies.

i've asked on alltrac.net but i was curious what all the 3SGTE guys & gals are running in their 6gc's here & how you like whatcha got smile.gif

thanks! smile.gif

I've owned numerous ACT clutches and I can say they have never done me wrong - no matter what car or the abuse. I usually just end up changing them out due to time and not because they are inoperable. I'll probably stick with ACT for life because of that. Check out my build thread for evidence - that old ACT evidently stood up to some serious pounding for a very long time. First pic on the page [about halfway down]:

Any 6puck clutch will be perfect.

What's the difference between the 4 puck and 6 puck clutch? I went with the 4puck competition clutch set-up with my s54 tranny and loved it. Now I have an e153 lsd tranny ready to be installed still waiting for an ACT clutch disc now. The ACT i ordered is also a 4 puck clutch disc. I was just wondering?

clutch master full faced kevlar/carbon composite. sprung. held the power great and drove like an everyday car.

going act 6 puck this time, because i plan on more violent launches.

Visit My Automotive & Tech Blog.
I have the centerforce stage one clutch..it has the exedy disk on one side and the duel friction on the other side...This is pn my 5sfte im not sure if they make it for the 3sgte but it has held up great at 240 whp and 272 torque and I have never felt a softer clutch i love it I dont no the life span but so far its been amazing.

i'm still a couple of months away from pulling the motor/tranny but it's always good to reasearch & get opinions before making a purchase on parts - so thanks for all the help & suggestions everyone smile.gif

We run Competition Clutch in just about everything. For 300awtq you could get away with a stage 2, but my personal favorite is the stage 4, which is the same price as the stage 2. I have these for $379.

its good for 350kw atw, which is a damm site more then i have lol.
no complaints here its a top clutch.

if you have never used a button clutch be wary, they take a bit of gettin used to.

Yours was one of the good ones, I blew up three spec clutches after yours and never used them again. I've never had a problem with Competition Clutch which is what we run on everything now smile.gif

Get a 4 or 6 pucks, they old more power and are better if you race / drag.

Also, try to not buy a sprung center since most of the time, when it breaks, its due to a spring that ****ed, and that is what you do not want to happened...

We installed a 4 puck solid center in a civic which went to the drag strip twice a week and the clutch lasted for 3 years after what it went for another year in another civic... and then broke
If you want a drivable every day car, I`d go for either a clutchmaster FX300 or RPS ProStreet rated to 450ft/llbs torque...organic clutches that are drivable and mare than capable of handling many launches.
i used to be a big ACT fan untill a few years ago, i had their 6 puck in my race celica and it came apart and destroyed the tranny. now im sponsored by Southbend clutch. i have their 6 puck sprung clutch in my Supra, Celica, and All-Trac. all i can say is i ****ing love them. im making over 600 HP in the celica and Supra and the clutch is holding just fine. talk to Andy in the import sector. www.southbendclutch.com tell him i sent you

OK well, realistically Vadar won't be 600 AWHP anytime soon - I think a nice ACT will do her just fine wink.gif

Does anyone have any feedback on Bully Clutches? A few of my friends are running them, one in particular has about 300 whp on a stage 3 6-puck sprung disc with matching pressure plate, daily driven and loves it to bits. I was thinking of a similar setup for my own car.

One o'dem crazy Canadian freaks, eh?
I got mine through special order with ACT. It is a 6-Puck Sprung Hybrid clutch. This allows the GT transmission to mate with the ST205 3sgte.

6236216 - ACT 6-Puck Disc - $180.00
T023 - ACT Heavy Duty Pressure Plate - $256.00

Works great.

i'm using a HKS Triple plate with HKS solid flywheel to tame 680bhp
I got a competition clutch stage 4 sprung 6-puck with a lightweight flywheel.....it took some getting used to but now it feels great to drive.....it can handle power and it isn't overly difficult for a daily driver

Stage 4 (6-puck), not 4-puck smile.gif

The 4-puck is a stage 5... that would be a little to harsh for the street I think smile.gif

Dang, I just realized that. But you did end up sending me a stage 5 then. I love the 4 puck though. Not harsh at all or me.
