Ok, ive got a rattle somewhere and its kinda worrying me and here is why.
I have this odd rattling sound, loud enough to make it over the engine noise, when my clutch is not engaged. When i engage the clutch it goes away. When im costing and out of gear i can hear the rattling and when im at a dead stop out of gear it rattles. When im rolling with it in gear no rattling, when im rolling with clutch engaged no rattling, when im at a dead stop with clutch in gear no rattling. Basically its only doing it when the car is out of gear and the clutch is not pushed down.
Now. I just had the tranny reworked as some might know and i called the guys who did it (these guys came very well recommended by Star Toyota, a Tech friend of mine, and believe me when i say that they replaced everything that was a problem or was going to be a problem any time soon), i even got a new clutch. Nothing is pulling in the tranny, it shifts smooth, no grind, no noise, no shacking.... nothing.
Now things that you need to know. My cars CVs are Sh!t! they are very out and need to be replaced. They got worse after the guys fixed the tranny but they were bad anyways and i figured them pulling them out and jerking them around to get the tranny out, finished the job and now they are just toast. I have new ones and will be replacing them Tuesday. Could this be causing the rattling? When i say they are bad, i mean, When i turn they pop and when i get past 3000 RPMs they make this really nasty grinding noise.
I dont Believe any of this stuff has to do with the tranny because all gears shift fine, pedal is tight, and no leaks.
But this rattle has got me stumped. I was going to see if i can get someone to press the clutch down and see if i can track the noise but i wanted to see if anyone had any ideas.
Thanks everyone.

This is a common thing that has been discussed here many times. Unfortuanetly I wasn't one of the people with the problem so I didn't really pay attn to what the fix was [Plus you know I don't do tranny's except to replace them]. Hopefully someone will be along to help here soon.

A friend told me he thought it could be the Throw Out Bearing. Could this be the case?
Yeah - Sounds right but I'm not the one to ask

For the sake of saying so. Say that is what the problem is. where is it? outside or inside the tranny?
On the shaft that goes through the clutch and flywheel. Inside the bellhousing.

You'll hear it and possibly feel it if you rest your foot on the cluth pedal lightly.

I have had the same noise for a few years now. Its mostly caused by the throw out bearing or something with the clutch assembly. It seems to be a very common issue, but never causes any problems for anyone.
What brand/type clutch is it?
Get your axles fixed asap too. They can also cause noises that go away when you put the clutch in.
From what your describing, that could be the cause of your issue. If your axle fails, you'll be stuck paying for a tow truck.

Ok. The axles are getting replaced tuesday, thats the soonest i can get to it.
Say it is the bearing, to replace it, would it be about the same difficulty as replacing a clutch? or is there more to it?
Lagos- its a OEM toyota clutch.
About the same as doing a clutch. Gearbox out, take bearing off the fork/lever, new one in, refit box.

Dont bother replacing it.
I had the noise, changed mine, had the noise again.
The only thing I can think of is that maybe the grease they used (or forgot to use) couldn't stand up to the high temps and isn't doing its job to quiet the bearing a bit. Even if thats the case, it still wont hurt anything.

I have the exact same problem, and have been advised exactly the same. Throwout bearing, not worth replacing unless you have to do the whole clutch. It's more just a noise than anything else, and since it's part of the clutch kit, it was/is replaced when the clutch was/is replaced.
Thats the thing though, I had the clutch replaced when the tranny burned out on me. I think im going to replace the Axles and see if that helps. If not, well if you guys are saying not to worry about the bearing then kool. when i go in and stage 2 it ill make sure everything is fine and replace if needed.
Thanks guys for all the help. I love this freakin site.
Ok. I got a little more info, i pulled the Invoice that i got when i got my tranny worked on and overhauled.
Complete Bearing Kit
Complete Synchronizer kit
5th Speed gear
5th speed Synchro Hub
Shift Fork
Complete Clutch Assembly
My understanding is that if they did a complete clutch kit or Bearing kit then shouldnt they have replaced the Throw out bearing?
I had that happen to me before, incorrect installation was what had happen. The pressure plate might not have been torque evenly and might have spin unevenly causing it to make the rattle with the throw out bearing.
Complete Clutch Assembly should consist of
Pressure plate
Driven plate
Release bearing (Throw out bearing)

Ok guys Update:
So the tranny place that i sent my car to said tat they felt like it was the Bearings too and they would go in a replace them for me for no charge. I got it back to day and i can still hear this noise. they said they replaced all the bearings and that they couldnt hear it anymore. But i stil can.
I also had them replace the Axles for me and now i also have a grinding noise coming from one of the front tires. Sounds like smooth Metal grinding against metal. like if the Rotter was rubbing on something. I think this problem is the rottor rubbing against the Dust plate behind the rottor, not the brakes because it does it wether the brakes are pushed in or not. so im not taking it back to these assholes,
Anyways. So lets say that the Bearing was replaced and the tranny checked out and everything was fine. Also the Axles are replaced and are not clicking and are cause NO vibration or shaking of the car at all. That being said. what could make a rattleing sound when the clutch is not depressed at ideal or at coast, but does not make a rattleing sound when the clutch is depressed or in gear driving down the road?
Question:
When you depress the clutch does it stabalize the engine at all? like Lets say that a motor mount was bad and the engine was rocking more then it should due to this mount being out. If i depress the clutch, does that stablize the engine in the bay?

If it sounds like a loud rattling coming from the tranny, its more than likely the throw out bearing. Even if you replaced it before, you could have gotten a cheapo one and now its out. If you are able to disengage the clutch and drive normally with the loud noise which gets worse when your in high Rpm's. Very easy to replace but requires you to take off your tranny since its attached to it and not the clutch it self.
