celica vs other coupes - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #58793 37 posts Started by Euphoria
hey, I know what everyone is thinking, we all know the 6th gen isn't the fastest car in its class, this isn't gonna be another one of of those threads but with everyones experiences, how much better or worse does the 6th Gen generally handle compared to other cars in its class such as ford probe/mx6, prelude, integra, hyundai coupe etc etc.
i dont know about the 3sge celica's

but in the states the gt and st are SLOW compared to well... every other car out there lol

handling, they handle great. stock for stock they are about equal with most other cars from that era in their class

however... cost wise, i think the celica is a bad choice for performance. yes it looks better than all the others, but you will spend alot more to get the same performance results out of them

now the overseas models that came stock with the 170hp 3sge.... they stand above all the others (and i imagine at a cost)

you know why they put sheep at the edge of a cliff.... that way they push back!(2:27:32 AM) edit: please f*cking work, f*ck, sh*t, piss(2:28:08 AM) edit: that did the trick

you guys ever think the celica handles better because it enters every corner slower and accelerates out slower then any other car? obviously if you slap on 100 more horsepower its not gonna grip on corners as well unless you snail into it like it still had 130hp
I've only driven a Hyundai Coupe and an Audi as comparisson (other than test drives in an SLK and a modern MG). With a 3SGE engine the Celica seems to accelerate and handle very well compared to the Hyundai and the Audi. The big difference is that the brakes on the Celica are crap.

You don't need a lot of horsepower to enter a corner quickly, you just need to be going fast. Most cars have to decelerate to some degree to go around a turn. A Celica might not have to decelerate as much as other cars (that have more horsepower). However, it can go around the turn as fast as those cars, if not faster. Accelerating out of the corner is a different story though...lol.
my celi out handles my friends 2001 mustang, camero, and integra. biggrin.gif it says a lot when i live in the country where all the roads are curvy as hell smile.gif

i can see that happening.
one car i REALLY want to backroad race is a prelude, they are basically our arch nemesis

when i start to autox i will see how my car performs against evo's and sti's, thats the class i will be in i suppose

I have noticed celicas do handle great, I always smash my friends through windy roads mainly cause they don't ever have good handling cars or fast cars, did have a run with my friend in his Ford XR6 Falcon which is only known in Australia but I beat him mainly cause I've had a bit more experience and knew the road.

the one Ive always wanted to know is if the mx6/probe handle better or worse than the celica, godam it topgear need to do some older cars haha.
i think they handle pretty great stock. especially for just a mac suspension. i think a lot of it is due to the car being pretty low compared to other cars. even before i lowered it, i felt like other coupes and sport sedans towered over me. and my lower stiffer suspension and 3-point rear bar make it even more fun cornering.

ss-iii splitters and 404 skirts areon. which means i need to update my sig.
For some reason I feel like this this somewhat hard to find a straight answer.

Just having a different brands of tire will make a car take a corner faster in the same car.

As far as steering response, so far I found that a 98 ford escort, 00 miata, yaris's, paseo's and my wrx all feel quicker/lighter in quick steering input, the celica just feels heavy (but it still holds the road). The celica have a heavy steering feeling for it's size.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V48SrQ0weUE this is quite good all fwd coupes from our era (Ford Probe, Honda Prelude, Vauxall Calibra, Volkswagen Corrado vr6) and missing dam celica haha

Yeah stock celica handles extremely well, don't know what it would be like with stock size rims and can't wait to start modding suspension.
hmm but what can u do to a paseo..... lmao i got a 95 paseo thats been hit by 3 deer... yes the deer ran into the car....
and as far as miatas go i got my ass handed to me off the line by a mazda speed mx5(miata) thank god they stopped makin them... lol but in top end and cornering the celica stuck to the road very well, dont know it thats because im not scared of crashing and he had his kid int he car but he deff wasnt scared to pullit up to a good speeed with me.... plain and simple celicas are slow and itll handle as good as u can drive it to an extent... most of the people who have ricers cant handle them to the extent they build them.... lol but its sure fun to build em to that...

nope the spoiler gives an automatic 200hp when installed and 300hp if the blocks are c/f...........

I don't normally drive fast, but when I do its on a curvy section of this island
just think about the price of a spoiler for a porche..... theyre gunna charge and arm and a leg for something like that and they know they can... so if someones goin to spend that much on just a spoiler, look at the body kit.. another money dump... now if they got all that money they probably have **** done to the engine so i highly doubt thta celica is winning... prob a straight away on a closed course and its getting lapped.... just my thoughts on this pic.... or the porche just is for looks and the gt4 is highly modded, or the porche got a bad start....

you'd really have to have certain controls: tires & track conditions being a couple examples.

lap times vs power/weight ratios?

more like lap analyzations where you compare entry/exit speeds;
or average speed thru the turns
or max Gs before spinning out on a circle
or time/max Gs on a slalom
or a bunch of different tests.

saying "it feels more responsive" definitely doesn't say anything as there are tons of factors dealing with that notion.

I hate to break it to you, but the 92+ Preludes (model with Vtec) would run circles around us.

My friend used to have a 94' that was mint, never taken out of the garage, and was owned by his grandfather. When he took it over, it had only 10k miles on it. The car was practically brand new. Now, I'm normally not a Honda fan, but this car was QUICK. He was always constantly spin through 3rd gear with the normal tires it had.

He took it out to a road course during the TX2k5 Supra Nationals, and he was lapping Supras with it. Mind you, the car was completely stock aside upgraded spark wires, distributor, and an awesome set of BF Goodrich G Force Sport KDW's (as well as 104 octane). He said the only downside was the stock suspension, as after a few laps, it was becoming spongy.

Even though it would be very rare to run into one in that condition, I still say it would beat the Celica.

Let's face it guys, the [US] Celica is a dog.

yea fensport builds some fast toyotas redface.gif

and as for cornering.......i dont know any car that could keep up with my celi back in the day on the course....i always lost whatever chased it, and i can say it would out-do my audi TT....as the celica's brakes would out last the others
well a few days ago i got into it with a evo on a really crappy road and it seemed that the celi was shootin outta the turns a lil harder, but he pwned me on the straightaways frown.gif

that's a big shocker there. now if only we had the gt-four in america. evo's and sti's would get a run for their money.
